About The Opportunity
The Mental Health Service at South Western Sydney Local Health District is seeking an enthusiastic and recovery-focused Staff Specialist Psychiatrist (full-time or part-time) to join the Statewide Mental Health Intensive Rehabilitation Unit (SMHIRU, formerly Civil Secure Unit) based at Campbelltown Hospital.
About The Unit
The Statewide Mental Health Intensive Rehabilitation Unit is part of the Statewide Intensive Rehabilitation Network, working collaboratively with the Castlereagh Unit at Orange. Referrals are reviewed jointly, and the waiting list is managed collaboratively across the network, supported by strong statewide leadership including the Statewide Rehabilitation Coordinator and the Ministry PCLI Lead. The Campbelltown unit currently operates 8 male inpatient beds, with planned future expansion to 12 male and 4 female beds (in separate pods), subject to additional operational funding. Opened in mid-2023, the unit is purpose-built with a modern design that strongly supports recovery-oriented care. Facilities include:
* A dedicated gym
* Activity and therapy rooms
* A large consumer kitchen
* Outdoor courtyards and BBQ areas
* Chill-out and sensory spaces
The Team
You will be joining a highly cohesive, experienced multidisciplinary team, with dedicated nursing and allied health staffing, and strong professional support from the PCLI Coordinator and Allied Health Heads of Department. The unit has already achieved multiple successful discharges to the community, reflecting the strength of its rehabilitation model.
Campbelltown Mental Health Facility
Campbelltown Hospital is a major tertiary facility within South Western Sydney LHD, with a comprehensive mental health campus comprising seven co-located inpatient units, specialist services, and strong academic and professional networks. This creates a highly supportive environment for collaboration, peer consultation, teaching, and service innovation. The close integration of services on campus allows for seamless clinical pathways and excellent professional support, particularly for psychiatrists with interests in complex care, rehabilitation, and service development.
The Role
This role is available on a full-time or part-time basis and offers an excellent opportunity for a psychiatrist with an interest in intensive rehabilitation, recovery-oriented practice, and statewide service delivery.

What You'll Be Doing
Provide clinical management and treatment of patients in a SWSLHD facility under your care. This care will be provided within the clinical privileges granted by the Chief Executive (CE) on the advice of the SWSLHD Medical and Dental Appointments Advisory Committee (MDAAC).

* Current medical practitioner, registered, or eligible for registration, with the Medical Board of Australia and Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians and/or other specialist recognition as provided under the Staff Specialists (State) Award.
* Demonstrated current clinical practice of a high standard and ability to adapt clinical practice in accordance with contemporary evidence based best practice
* Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management
* Demonstrated participation in teaching and training at undergraduate and/or post graduate level, including supervision of junior medical staff
* Demonstrated commitment to continuing self-education and development, including evidence of participation in continuing medical education/ continuing professional development
* Demonstrated ability to comply with the service objectives of a public health organisation, including the provision of services to the local community, effective utilisation of resources, and preparedness to participate in the provision of health services at an LHD level
* Preparedness to participate in a hospital, service or LHD on-call roster
* Evidence of ability to work cooperatively with other staff and practitioners and in a multidisciplinary health care team
