Are you ready to play a key role in shaping the future of Western Australia's resources sector?
The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of WA (CME) is seeking an experienced and dynamic policy leader to join our team asAssistant Director – Policy. In this pivotal role, you will lead a talented team to develop robust, evidence-based policy positions across critical portfolio areas, including:
* Industry Competitiveness and Economics
* Health, Safety, and People
* Resource Development and Sustainability
* Climate and Energy
Working closely with CME member companies and stakeholders, you will drive the policy agenda that provides real outcomes in these portfolio areas. This role further supports the Director – Policy in delivering strategic priorities and navigating complex state and national issues that impact the sector's future.
Key responsibilities:
* Lead and develop the policy portfolios covering Industry Competitiveness and Economics; Health, Safety, and People; Resource Development and Sustainability; and Climate and Energy.
* Manage the policy team, including staff resources, planning, budget forecasting, scheduling, and quality control, fostering a cohesive, high-performing, and collaborative team culture that drives the achievement of key performance indicators.
* Manage policy work programs on a diverse range of complex issues, including regulation, sustainability, workforce, infrastructure, and community engagement.
* Develop and deliver the implementation of CME's policy platform, ensuring alignment with strategic goals and member priorities.
* Manage all portfolio-related policy and advocacy activities, ensuring timely, high-quality, and influential communication with relevant stakeholders.
* Support the Director – Policy by contributing to CME's strategic direction, implementing policy and advocacy strategies and workplans, and providing high-level advice.
* Proactively engage with key stakeholders, gather input, and assess the effectiveness of policy strategies and initiatives to build awareness and support for CME's policy positions.
* Build and maintain trusted relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including CME member companies, local, state, and federal government representatives and agencies, community leaders, and other state-based and national peak industry bodies.
* Establish and leverage influential networks to effectively advocate for CME's policy priorities at state and federal levels, and across the broader WA Community through formal and informal channels.
* Advocate CME policy positions to government, policy and advisory bodies, industry forums, and other relevant platforms.
* Represent CME at industry events, forums, and public engagements to promote the sector's contribution, profile, and reputation.
What you'll bring to the role:
* A relevant tertiary qualification, with a minimum of 10 years' work experience, including a minimum of 3 years in a managerial capacity, within complex policy or advocacy environments.
* Demonstrated leadership capability, with experience managing teams and resources across multiple portfolios.
* Proven experience in policy development and program implementation, ideally within a complex, member-based, or stakeholder-rich environment.
* Current working knowledge and experience relevant to the Western Australian resources sector.
* Operational knowledge or experience is desirable in hard rock mining, oil and gas, or upstream/downstream processing.
* Strong business development skills and experience engaging effectively with member and prospective members.
* A detailed understanding of state and federal government policy development processes.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare influential policy reports, submissions, and presentations.
* Well-developed stakeholder engagement skills and the ability to build trusted relationships and influence at senior levels.
* A collaborative, strategic mindset and sound understanding of the Western Australian policy landscape.
