Overview

The Royal Hobart Hospital is seeking interest from suitably qualified applicants for Staff Specialist (General Surgery) (Fellow) vacancies. The Royal Hobart Hospital is the tertiary referral hospital for Tasmania and the principal teaching hospital for the University of Tasmania Medical School. The Hospital provides most specialist medical services for the region or state. This role has been established to improve the delivery of General Surgical services to patients and assist in the co-ordination and training of surgical Resident Medical Officers (RMOs) and Registrars. It is ideally suited to a surgeon who has recently been awarded a Fellowship in General Surgery (or will be prior to the commencement of employment). Much of the clinical work involves managing acute / emergency cases as part of the Department of General Surgery’s Emergency Surgical Unit (ESU), with involvement in outpatient and elective services. The RHH Department of General Surgery offers major sub-specialty areas (colorectal, UGI, HPB, breast, endocrine) with opportunities for exposure to those fields for the successful candidate.

There may also be opportunities to be involved with other teaching and research activities.

Responsibilities

- Operate in the Main Theatre Suite.
- Operate in the Day Procedure Unit.
- See patients in Outpatient Clinic.
- Ward rounds / post-operative reviews.
- On call for emergencies during and out of hours.
- Provide consultative service for other specialty units.
- Supervise the clinical work of junior medical staff in the Unit.

Qualifications and Requirements

- Holds specialist registration; or
- Registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) on the specialist pathway; or
- Registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) with a recognised overseas specialist qualification and assessed as having sufficient experience in the speciality.

Salary and Benefits

- Salary base range for Specialist Medical Practitioner Level 1 to Level 11, with further salary increments; access to Senior Specialist Medical Practitioner salary range subject to criteria.

Details of Appointment

2 x Fixed term full-time day work (with on-call) vacancies available, up to 76 hours per fortnight, commencing 02 February 2026 until 01 February 2027. Selection process may be used to fill subsequent similar vacancies.

Essential Requirements

- Holds specialist registration; or
- Registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) on the specialist pathway; or
- Registered Medical Practitioner who is an International Medical Graduate (IMG) with a recognised overseas specialist qualification and sufficient experience in the speciality.
