. The award-winning Daily Mercury is looking for a confident and experienced journalist to join the team who can help readers understand the complex issues that matter.
The role requires a writer with demonstrated ability who isn't afraid to ask tough questions and tackle some of the region's most key issues such as mining, industry and politics. The best candidate will be skilled in news gathering, able to build rapport with key contacts, have a solid grasp of social media and the ability to pitch and deliver engaging, high-quality content. While the masthead has recently relaunched a successful print product, the focus is on digital-first storytelling and online engagement; the ability to assemble in-depth packages for a print audience is also required.
Responsibilities
Source and create compelling stories that resonate with an audience
Deliver relevant content that engages current subscribers and attracts new readers
Work under deadline pressure in a fast-paced environment to cover breaking stories without compromising quality or accuracy
Focus on online engagement and drive subscription growth
Demonstrate initiative to seek out stories that are not already breaking and identify unique angles that drive conversation and move issues forward
Digest digital data and use it in planning content
Turn dry topics into engaging reads
Who are you? (Qualifications)
Senior journalist with a minimum 2-3 years of newsroom experience
Thrives on meeting business outcomes and reader expectations, and actively seeks to exceed them
Ability to cut through political speak and explain complex mining issues
Strong news judgment and interview skills
Experience in digital storytelling as well as print
Willing to embrace change and demonstrate agility in a fast-paced sector
Self-starter with strong organization and time management
Understands social media, SEO, and digital data
Hardworking, detail-oriented and able to stay calm under pressure
Able to build and maintain a solid network of valuable contacts
