Backend Software Engineer, Senior

Location: Chippendale, Sydney

Key technologies: REST APIs, Hibernate, Spring, Docker, Amazon Web Services (AWS), OpenTelemetry (Otel), MySQL, CI/CD

As Backend Software Engineer, you will design and develop robust, scalable systems that enable the platform to process high volumes of data and requests from thousands of merchants and millions of users. You will work closely with Product & Engineering teams to ship improvements on a weekly cadence, ensuring reliability, stability, and rapid growth.

• Design, build, and maintain robust RESTful APIs that securely connect frontend applications, services, and integrations.
• Manage, optimize, and evolve distributed services and server‐side infrastructure, including load balancing, database sharding, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Own the resolution of server‐side errors and issues, collaborating early with Product, Engineering, and Customer Operations teams to diagnose and fix performance bottlenecks, data corruption, and race conditions.
• Architect and build extensible, secure backend systems using Java (JVM), Spring Boot, and Hibernate.
• Define and maintain robust, self‐documenting RESTful API design standards.
• Design efficient MySQL schemas and write optimized queries; leverage column‐oriented data warehouses such as ClickHouse, Metabase, and myDBR for analytical insights.
• Deploy and maintain applications in Docker containers, ensuring automated CI/CD pipelines and frequent, reliable releases.
• Implement observability with OpenTelemetry (Otel) to trace, log, and monitor system events, identifying bottlenecks before they cause outages.
