Australia is regularly affected by severe weather events. These events are growing in frequency and severity, leading to increased impacts on the economy, infrastructure, property, and wellbeing. To address this, the Bureau of Meteorology has undertaken significant steps to deliver customer focussed, integrated and resilient national operations through the Community Services Group (CSG). CSG is comprised of Environmental Prediction Services (EPS), Decision Support Services (DSS) and National Production Services (NPS) which are configured to enable scalable, national and resilient services. The EPS program is responsible for the national monitoring, analysis and reporting of hazardous conditions. During severe weather, EPS will be deployed into operations to deliver specialised, hazard-based advice, warning and outlook services. Operating with a national capability, EPS has four predictive service units: Severe Weather, Marine and Antarctic, Water, and Climate, each of which play a key role in the value chain of the Bureau's capability to deliver a suite of valuable products and services to the Australian community. The Severe Weather Team is responsible for the daily monitoring of Thunderstorms, Severe Weather and Heavy Rainfall, Tropical Cyclone, and Fire, Heatwave & Air Quality. The team provides advice on conditions which are hazardous or may have a significant impact. The team functions as a single capability across three locations, Perth, Brisbane and Melbourne. The Tropical Cyclone team is located in Perth and Brisbane, the Fire, Heatwave and Air Quality team in Perth and Melbourne, and the Thunderstorm and Heavy rainfall team in Brisbane and Melbourne. There will be an expectation that Severe Weather Senior Meteorologists will develop and maintain hazard expertise and competency across multiple hazard areas and teams to allow for flexible deployment, operational resilience and diversity of work. This may include skills that contribute outside of Severe Weather into other parts of CSG. The Severe Weather Senior Meteorologists will also have a demonstrated ability to coach, develop and mentor individuals and teams. They will deeply understand and articulate the needs of Bureau customers, partners and stakeholders, in order to lead on the development and delivery of high value products and services. Severe Weather Senior Meteorologists will display a dedicated curiosity about severe weather and the impacts of the evolving weather, flood, ocean, and climate landscape. Employing personal drive and integrity, and communicating with influence, you will empower a high-performing team through promoting a positive culture of teamwork and continuous improvement. This role will report to the Team Lead of their hazard specialisation and will be expected to undertake shift work and extended working hours as directed during severe weather. The key duties of the position include The responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to: 1. Undertaking monitoring, analysis, prediction and warning for conditions that may be hazardous or significantly impact Australian communities and customers. 2. Leading the operational service delivery for severe weather forecasts and warnings, and potentially other areas in CSG aligned with your skills, as part of the CSG operating model. 3. Making evidence-based decisions under pressure using up-to-date science, sound judgement, the application of best-practice principles and the Bureau's operating procedures. 4. Ensuring operations are collaborative, responsive, and built on the principles of innovation and continuous improvement. 5. Leading a portfolio of activities and projects in support of CSG objectives and in collaboration with portfolio leads in other EPS teams. This will include contributing your expertise to activities within EPS as well as other areas within the Bureau. 6. Providing information relating to your areas of expertise to customer facing areas of the Bureau (including but not limited to Decision Support Services and Business Solutions Group). 7. Engaging with customers and other stakeholders in collaboration with customer facing areas of the Bureau (Decision Support Services and Business Solutions Group). 8. Demonstrating strategic thinking and focus to drive continuous improvement in the development and management of severe weather products, services, and processes. 9. Contributing to defining severe-weather-related training and competencies, you will build your own expertise in the required technical competencies, as well as empower others in the team to build their technical expertise in ways that optimise the team's capability. 10. Contributing to the continued development of the Severe Weather Environmental Prediction Services team. 11. During significant weather events, you will be committed to supporting the Bureau and our customers outside of standard working hours. 12. Complying with all Bureau work, health and safety policies and procedures, and taking reasonable care for your own health and safety and that of employees, contractors and visitors who may be affected by your conduct.
