Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital is seeking a passionate Unaccredited Trainee to join our Orthopaedic Department in 2026!

HNELHD facilitates a WBA program and was the first LHD to deliver the WBA and now has more than 15 years’ experience. The HNELHD WBA runs over 6 months is one of the largest in Australia and is based in Newcastle with a regional hub in Tamworth.
Where you'll be working
You will be working across a broad scope of general orthopaedic practice; the Orthopaedic Service at Tamworth Rural Referral Hospital encourages collaboration and collegiate relationships across multi-disciplinary teams ensuring the best service delivery. You will be working across a broad scope of general orthopaedic practice with the opportunity to participate in planned and trauma cases.
We are seeking an Unaccredited Trainee who is eager to develop professional skills to put them on the path of progressing to Accredited Orthopaedic Training.
With 348 treatment spaces, we are the major Rural Referral Hospital to the North West of NSW. We conduct over 9000 surgical procedures per annum over 5 theatre spaces; with the new facility boasting an additional 3 theatre rooms which have been built for future growth.

We are a hub for the AMC approved WBA program and our current waitlist for placement is less than 12 months.
What you'll be doing
The primary purpose of the role is to provide effective clinical management of orthopaedic patients, under appropriate supervision, whilst developing expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment. The unaccredited trainee is the key person who works closely with all members of a multi-disciplinary team and deals with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature, whilst exercising discretion, sensitivity and maintaining confidentiality.
Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the unaccredited trainee’s skills, knowledge and experience. They will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). All patients managed within the hospitals of the health service are under the direct care of a specialist medical practitioner. All decisions regarding a patient’s care are to be clearly communicated with the specialist responsible for that care.
Qualifications -
- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category
- Drivers licence in order to provide service between hospitals and out of hours.
- Minimum of 3 years post graduate experience at commencement of post, with minimum 1 year experience in Orthopaedics.
- Excellent communication (verbal and written) with patients, their families, medical and non-medical colleagues; Demonstrates ability to provide empathetic and expert clinical care
- Ability to work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team as shown by diligence, punctuality, organisational/ record keeping, empathy, team work, time management and a qualified manner, within a supervised complex clinical environment.
- Demonstrated commitment to the Orthopaedic Training Program with evidence of continuing professional development and self-education, and teaching undergraduate and postgraduates
