A council in the south‑eastern suburbs is seeking a motivated and community‑focused Building Inspector to join a supportive, experienced, and progressive team. This diverse role will see you working across inspections, enforcement, report and consent assessments, emergency response, and proactive auditing that enhances safety across the municipality.

About the Role
This opportunity offers far more than routine inspections. You'll be working closely with seasoned professionals, gaining exposure to complex regulatory functions, and contributing to the safety and integrity of the built environment. Field‑based work, flexibility, and ongoing professional development are all part of the package.

Key Responsibilities

* Conduct inspections to ensure compliance with the Building Act 1993 and Building Regulations 2018
* Investigate complaints and unsafe building works, implementing appropriate enforcement action
* Audit high‑risk buildings for compliance with essential safety measures
* Conduct fire‑risk audits of commercial buildings in collaboration with the EPA and other agencies
* Undertake joint inspections with planning compliance and environmental health teams
* Support the Municipal Building Surveyor with report and consent assessments.
* Assist in preparing legal briefs for prosecution matters
* Perform swimming pool and spa safety barrier inspections
* Respond to emergency callouts, providing expert technical advice
* Contribute to developing and improving building-related policies and procedures

Key Selection Criteria
* Registration as a Registered Building Practitioner - Building Inspector
* Demonstrated experience in a similar Building Inspector role
* Strong working knowledge of the Building Act, Building Regulations, BCA, and relevant Australian Standards
* Excellent communication skills with the ability to balance compliance and customer service
* Proven ability to work autonomously and exercise sound judgement
* Strong problem‑solving and investigative skills
* Experience working in local government or a regulatory environment
* Ability to work collaboratively across multidisciplinary teams
* Demonstrated a customer‑centric and diplomatic approach when dealing with the community and stakeholders
