The Tasmanian Psychiatry Training Program (TPTP) is currently recruiting for Registrar positions starting Monday 2 February 2026. Rotations include Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Forensic Psychiatry, Consultation Liaison Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, Old Age, Perinatal, Community, Rehabilitation, Medical Administration, and Private Psychiatry.The Statewide Mental Health Service reforms are providing expanding opportunities in services such as Acute Care, First Responder, and Hospital in the Home Teams. In partnership with the University of Tasmania, the Service has established the Tasmanian Centre for Mental Health Service Innovation, dedicated to enhancing and improving mental health service offerings for children, young people, and adults across Tasmania.Trainees can complete their whole training in Tasmania. The TPTP offers generalist training as well as advanced training certificates in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Forensic Psychiatry, Consultation Liaison Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, and Psychiatry of Old Age. With approximately 36 trainees across the state, the TPTP offers a personal program with strong support from training supervisors and an active peer network.The Tasmanian Branch Training Committee provides an overview of the Training program, assists with allocations of rotations, and upholds College policies and procedures under the auspices of the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Psychiatrists (RANZCP).Working in SMHS provides a unique opportunity to practice psychiatry in various subspecialty areas such as Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Forensic Psychiatry, Consultation Liaison Psychiatry, Addiction Psychiatry, Old Age, Perinatal, Community, and Rehabilitation.With major mental health reforms underway, there are expansions to existing services and new teams developing, such as Hospital in the Home, Outreach teams, and the Tasmanian Eating Disorders Service. Key Responsibilities: Admission and care of patients and liaison with Specialist Medical Staff regarding patients.Attend Specialist ward rounds and record all decisions made in the medical history.Timely response to calls by members of the patient's care team.Ensure that consultations occur when requested.Position Features:The position will require participation in after-hours work.The position will require participation in an on-call roster.Doctors located in the Northwest Regional Hospital will provide Code Blue and MET calls to both public and private patients within the co-located Private Hospital.Staff employed against this Statement of Duties as a Visiting Medical Practitioner will be employed in accordance with the Tasmanian Visiting Medical Practitioners.Details of Appointment:Multiple fixed Term full-time, day worker (with on-call) positions working 76 hours per fortnight, commencing 2 February 2026 for a period of 3 years. Registrars will receive 10 hours of paid, protected training time per fortnight. notwithstanding hours to be negotiated with the successful applicant.Applicants should note that, for a period of twelve months from the date of publication, this selection process may be used to fill subsequent or similar full-time and part-time vacancies.Medical Practitioner Level 5 - Level 11 $134,930- $189,005 per annum, pro rata + 11.5% superannuation + access to salary packaging.Essential Criteria:General or limited registration with the Medical Board of Australia.Current Working with Children Registration (where applicable and as determined by individual position requirements).Enrolled and completing training in the medical specialty of psychiatry with RANZCP.Desirable Criteria:Has successfully completed all fellowship examinations relevant to their training program and employment and is within 1 year of obtaining specialist fellowship.The Head of the State Service has determined that the person nominated for this job is to satisfy a pre employment check before taking up the appointment, on promotion or transfer.
