Are you an experienced mechanical engineer ready to step into a leadership role that lets you shape both projects and people?
We're looking for a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join our Canberra team as 2IC, working closely alongside our ACT Director. This is a role for someone who thrives on delivering technically excellent work and wants a genuine stake in the direction of the office — someone who leads by doing, builds lasting client relationships, and brings out the best in those around them.
The Role
This position sits at the intersection of technical delivery and leadership. Day-to-day, you'll be hands‐on — leading mechanical design and documentation across a diverse range of projects in the built environment — while also sharing responsibility for the operational and strategic running of the Canberra office.
You'll work with clients, lead multi‐discipline project teams, mentor engineers, and contribute to business development. Client relationships matter here, but so does your ability to deliver: on time, on scope, and to a high technical standard.
What You'll Be Doing
* Leading mechanical engineering design and documentation (HVAC, ventilation, supplementary air systems) across medium to large commercial, residential, aged care and government projects.
* Leading multi‐discipline project teams from brief through to construction.
* Mentoring and developing junior and mid‐level engineers.
* Supporting the ACT Director in the day‐to‐day running of the Canberra office.
* Building and maintaining strong client and project partner relationships.
* Attending client and design meetings, conducting site inspections.
* Managing calculations, return briefs and technical reports.
* Ensuring compliance with relevant Australian Standards and the NCC.
* Identifying and contributing to new business opportunities as they arise.
About You
* Degree qualified in Mechanical Engineering.
* Minimum 10 years' experience in Australian building services, ideally in consulting.
* Proven track record delivering small to large projects, across the built environment.
* Experience with new and existing buildings.
* Experience in a leadership capacity — formal or informal — highly regarded.
* Strong technical ability paired with excellent communication skills.
* Comfortable engaging with clients, consultants and contractors across all project phases.
* Detail‐oriented with a commitment to quality and accuracy.
* Proficient in Revit/AutoCAD, BIM360, Microsoft Office and OneDrive.
* A proactive problem‐solver with a positive, team‐first attitude.
