**Duties and Responsibilities**:
- Undertake statutory inspections including dangerous buildings and structures, illegal buildings and structures, essential safety measures in the buildings, swimming pool barriers, temporary structures, places of public entertainment and any other inspection
- Prepare notices of entry, inspection reports, correspondence and other documentation in relation to the inspections and investigations
- Prepare necessary reports, correspondence, briefs of evidence and other documentation to allow commencement of enforcement actions and act as an expert witness and informant where necessary.
- Effectively contribute to legal proceedings against breaches under the Building Act and Building Regulations and provide assistance in relation to court processes.
- Effectively participate in preparation and implementation of a program to undertake the required inspections and maintain data base and register of inspections.
- Investigate complaints in relation to building matters and determine the appropriate action and follow up until resolved.
- Provide professional advice with respect to the essential safety measures, annual essential safety measures report, swimming pool barriers, installation of smoke alarms and other building matters as required
- Undertake mandatory building inspections for buildings under construction where Council is appointed building surveyor to ensure compliance with building permit and relevant regulations and standards, advise builders of non-compliance; issue inspection reports and negotiate changes to building in line with the building permit and relevant standards and codes.
- Provide feedback to Municipal Building Surveyor on any matter that may impact service provision or the interest of Council
- Effectively contribute to achievement of a competitive Building Services section in terms of both cost effectiveness and service quality.
- Handle and investigate requests for service and enquiries and contribute to the marketing and market development of Building Services e.g. maintaining a high standard of presentation and customer liaison; provide customer feedback to the organisation.
- Assist with telephone and counter enquiries.
**Requirements and Qualifications**:
- Tertiary qualifications in Building Inspecting or a related discipline.
- High level of practical knowledge of the Building Acts, Building Regulation, National Construction Codes and relevant standards with the ability to interpret in a practical manner.
- Ability to read and understand building plans and specifications.
- Confidence in decision making.
- Ability to work within the framework of existing and changing policies, regulation codes and procedures.
- Demonstrated computer skills including word processing and use of databases.
- Current professional registration as a Building Inspector Unlimited or Limited with the Building Practitioners Board (Vic).
- Several years relevant experience in local Government and private sector within the building industry.
- Current Victorian Driver's Licence.
