The Role
Within the Defence Finance Group an EL1 Travel Policy Manager is accountable under broad direction to perform and achieve complex to very complex travel policy development, and a broad range of other travel related implementation, analysis and reporting. They require an in depth knowledge of Commonwealth financial and travel frameworks to support decision making to improve travel policy and travel experience in Defence.
A Travel Policy Manager exercises a considerable degree of independence and performs a leadership role. They demonstrate personal drive and integrity by applying sound judgement, taking responsibility for outcomes, and modelling ethical decision making. They provide expert policy advice and possess a deep understanding of the finance function, including the development, implementation, and review of policies and procedures to drive compliance and provide solutions to address non compliance.
They engage in complex to very complex problem solving and issues management and may coordinate detailed or sensitive projects that impact strategic, political, or operational outcomes for Defence. In doing so, they shape strategic thinking by anticipating emerging issues, identifying opportunities for improvement, and aligning work with broader organisational objectives.
A Travel Policy Finance Manager is accountable for planning, leading, and managing a range of human and physical resources and exercising the associated people and financial responsibilities to achieve business outcomes. They lead one or more teams, cultivating productive working relationships by fostering collaboration, valuing diverse perspectives, and developing team capability. They develop and implement work plans, set performance indicators, and review individual, team and business performance with a focus on continuous improvement.
They are responsible for actively managing key stakeholder relationships, identifying expectations and concerns, and developing and communicating methodologies and practices to achieve outcomes. They communicate with influence by presenting complex policy information clearly, negotiating persuasively, and tailoring messages to the audience. The role requires a commitment to achieving results through effective prioritisation, resource allocation, and the delivery of high quality outputs within agreed timeframes and standards. They share knowledge, mentor less experienced employees, and contribute to ongoing professional development within the work area.
About our Team
The Defence Travel Policy team develops and maintains the official travel policy and supports all related activities for travel undertaken by Australian Public Servants (APS) and Australian Defence Force (ADF) members in the course of their official duties. The travel support infrastructure ensures Defence travel is consistent, efficient, compliant, and aligned with Whole of Government travel arrangements and other Commonwealth framework. The team closely monitors operational requirements, the broader travel environment, and emerging business and compliance risks to ensure policy settings remain contemporary and fit for purpose.
