The Role
HDR is seeking a highly experienced Structural Engineer at Associate Director level to join our Victorian transport structures team in Melbourne.
This role will see you providing technical leadership within the Australian transport structures team and contributing more broadly HDR's global Bridges and Structures Business Class.
Reporting to the Transport Structures Lead – Victoria, you will be the technical lead for the structural design of bridges and transport structures, driving delivery across multiple major projects while supporting HDR's growth in Victoria.
A key responsibility will be to serve as a
Proof Engineer
for projects in Victoria, requiring pre-qualification from the Victoria Department of Transport and Planning.
Key Responsibilities
Lead, deliver and provide specialist advice on design activities associated with transport structures such as bridges, culverts, retaining walls, gantries and tunnels
Provide hands-on technical leadership and direction, developing design criteria, calculations, plans, and specifications
Serve as a Proof Engineer in Victoria and lead teams executing proof engineering services
Manage the development of structural asset management deliverables including reports, drawings, models, and specifications
Collaborate closely with local, national, and global teams to leverage expertise and deliver integrated solutions.
Drive innovation within the Australian transport structures team.
Mentor and coach junior engineers and team members, fostering a supportive and high-performance culture
Represent HDR in the market, contributing to business growth and establishing our technical leadership in the region
Actively lead HDR's commitment to Safety and Quality with a focus on our Drive to Zero initiative
Qualifications & Experience
Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or related discipline
Chartered membership of Engineers Australia (Structures) and listing on the National Engineering Register
Registered Professional Engineer Victoria (RPEV)
Ability and commitment to obtain Proof Engineer pre-qualification from the Victoria Department of Transport and Planning (current or previous prequalification preferred)
20+ years of structural engineering experience focused on bridges and transport structures, with strong consulting and project delivery background primarily in Melbourne and Victoria
Proven ability to lead design teams and manage complex projects
Deep knowledge of Australian and Victorian bridge design standards and technical requirements
Proficiency in structural and asset management software tools such as Midas Civil, SpaceGass, Strand 7, SBD, and Microsoft Office suite
Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills, able to work effectively in multidisciplinary and diverse teams
Highly motivated, self-directed, and a strong team player with excellent coordination skills

Required Qualifications
Proven hands-on experience in all aspects of bridge design projects
Demonstrated leadership skills, communication skills and ability to work with various teams
Strong communication skills and willing to work in a team environment
Must be comfortable being viewed as a technical expert in engineering analysis and design and have proven background of technical leadership on these types of projects
