Senior Legal Counsel - Consumer & Business Banking Lawyer
Opportunity for a Consumer & Business Banking Lawyer/Senior Legal Counsel to join a bank with strong values and a purpose-led culture, as it enters an exciting new phase of growth and evolution.
About the Role:
This is a high-impact role for an experienced lawyer providing legal guidance across banking and corporate operations. Reporting to the Chief Legal Officer and working within a collaborative legal team, you will help drive compliance, governance, and risk management while supporting strategic and operational goals.
This role suits a commercially minded lawyer with broad in-house financial services experience, capable of managing enterprise-wide legal issues—from mergers and employment law to IP/IT procurement and company secretarial matters.
Key Responsibilities:
* Provide clear, commercially focused legal advice on banking, corporate, and financial services matters.
* Lead contract negotiations and management, including SLAs, supplier agreements, finance agreements, and corporate initiatives.
* Navigate complex regulatory requirements and ensure compliance with the Corporations Act, Banking Act, and relevant ASIC/APRA regimes.
* Support board and governance functions, advising on director duties, conflicts of interest, and statutory reporting.
* Collaborate with business units on risk management and dispute resolution strategies.
* Engage with stakeholders across senior leadership, regulators, and external counsel.
Requirements & Experience:
* Admitted solicitor in NSW with 7–10 years of post-qualification experience in financial services, banking, or corporate law.
* Expertise in consumer and retail banking law, with the ability to manage a broad legal portfolio (including employment, IP/IT procurement, and governance).
* Strong knowledge of financial services laws and regulations, including ASIC and APRA frameworks.
* Proven stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence at executive and board levels.
* A collaborative, pragmatic, and commercially minded approach to legal problem-solving.
* Familiarity with customer-owned institutions is a plus.
