About the Opportunity
The Staff Specialist, Occupational Physician provides expert, risk-based medical advice that supports the health, safety and wellbeing of our workforce.
In this role, you will play a critical part in supporting pre-employment medical assessments, ongoing fitness for duty, and the management of non-work-related health conditions that may impact a worker’s ability to perform their role safely. You will also contribute to the development and ongoing review of policies, standards and systems that support safe and sustainable work across NSW Ambulance, including the Paramedic Health Standard.
This position works closely with executive leaders, People & Culture, operational managers, employees, and external medical providers to deliver high-quality, evidence-based occupational health advice.
In this role, you will have the opportunity to:
* Provide expert health risk-based advice to support staff wellbeing and ensure safe work practices across NSW Ambulance.
* Assess and manage medical conditions affecting employment and fitness for duty, helping staff perform their roles safely.
* Develop and implement policy frameworks and safe systems of work that protect and support the workforce.
* Analyse workforce health data and contribute to ongoing improvements, including systematic review of the Paramedic Health Standard.

Essential Requirements
* A Medical Practitioner registered or eligible for registration with AHPRA, with Fellowship of the Australasian Faculty of Occupational & Environmental Medicine (AFOEM), Public Health Medicine (AFPHM), Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP), or other specialist recognition under the Staff Specialist (State) Award.
* Thrives in applying contemporary, evidence-based practice, with expertise in occupational health assessments including fitness and capacity for work.
* Demonstrates experience in consulting to mitigate occupational health risks, with strong skills in identifying, assessing, prioritising, and controlling health and safety risks.
* Values continuous self-education and actively participates in professional development and continuing medical education.
* Proven ability to provide expert medical evidence and advice at an executive level.
* Thrives in a public health setting, balancing service delivery, resource use, and broader organisational objectives, with experience in occupational health, public health, or medical governance.
* Understands Diversity & Inclusion, applying contemporary practices and ensuring reasonable workplace adjustments in line with legislative requirements and NSW Health policy.

You are an experienced Occupational Physician with strong clinical judgment and a collaborative, solutions-focused approach. You provide expert advice on fitness for duty, pre-employment assessments, and managing non-work-related health conditions in high-risk operational settings. Skilled at both clinical and strategic levels, you analyse workforce health data, identify trends, and deliver practical, evidence-based recommendations.
You build trusted relationships with leaders, managers, employees, and external providers, communicating clearly on complex health matters. You are motivated to make a meaningful impact on workforce health, safety, and wellbeing, in an organisation that values inclusion and safe systems of work.
