The Opportunity
We are seeking an experienced Financial Controller to lead the development and optimisation of the financial operations of the My PlantCo Group and its three operating subsidiaries. Working within a close-knit, high-growth team of 20 (and expanding), you will be a key member of the Management team as the business transitions from an SME to an institutional-grade growth company. This follows recent achievements of significant growth, industry recognition and securing high-quality capital providers (superannuation funds, professional / institutional investors, federal and state grant programs).
Reporting to the CFO, this role is responsible for financial integrity, compliance and control across the group, while overseeing day-to-day accounting operations and team development. Beyond traditional responsibilities, you will help build the financial foundations required to support significant growth and upcoming strategic milestones, providing clear, actionable insights to the CFO and executive team.
As part of the Management team, you will be actively involved in broader leadership matters including strategy, growth, fundraising and strategic partnerships. This is a pivotal role in a high-growth, award-winning company, offering strong development opportunities, including potential pathways into C-level roles, Company Secretary responsibilities, or expanded leadership beyond finance.
Initial Key Responsibilities
In the initial 12 – 18 months, you will lead several foundational responsibilities to assist the company's growth trajectory:
1. Capital Readiness: Actively prepare the business for the next capital raise by providing high-quality financial modelling, scenario analysis, and due diligence support.
2. Audit & Compliance: Lead the initial audit process, including auditor scoping and selection, ensuring all statutory accounts meet AASB requirements.
3. Systems & Scaling: Review and recommend accounting packages and ERP systems to support a larger, more complex business.
4. Financial Foundations: Implement new financial control processes, approvals, and group cost allocations across our three subsidiaries.
Ongoing Key Responsibilities
In addition to the above, ongoing responsibilities will include:
1. Financial Reporting and Management Accounting
Prepare consolidated monthly, quarterly and annual group financial reports to support CFO and Board
Produce divisional performance, revenue/cost variance analysis (budget-to-actual variance analysis)
Oversee cash flow reporting, forecasting and working capital management across the group
2. Statutory Accounting and Audit Management
Prepare statutory financial statements for the group and subsidiaries in accordance with AASB
Lead year-end audit processes, acting as primary liaison with external auditors
Ensure timely delivery of audit requirements and implementation of audit recommendations
3. Tax Compliance and Regulatory Obligations
Oversee all tax compliance including BAS/IAS, FBT, payroll tax and income tax returns
Manage external tax advisers and interactions with regulatory authorities (ATO, ASIC, state bodies)
Ensure timely and accurate lodgement of all statutory filings
4. Financial Controls and Process Improvement
Maintain and strengthen internal financial controls, policies and procedures across the group
Implement robust month-end and year-end close processes to ensure accuracy and efficiency
Lead the development and documentation of accounting procedures and control frameworks
Identify opportunities for process automation and efficiency improvements in finance operations
5. Systems Management and Implementation
Oversee the day-to-day operation and optimisation of accounting systems (Xero and related platforms)
Support the selection and implementation of new systems and tools to support business growth
Drive data integrity and system improvements to enhance reporting capabilities
Coordinate system integrations across accounting, payroll, inventory and procurement functions
6. Budgeting, Forecasting and Financial Planning Support
Lead the annual budgeting process across all divisions in collaboration with the CFO and business leaders
Prepare rolling forecasts and scenario analysis to support strategic planning
Develop financial models for business growth initiatives and investment decisions
7. Research & Development (R&D) Financial Management
Oversee the financial management of R&D activities, including expenditure tracking and cost allocation
Prepare R&D tax incentive claims and acquittals in compliance with regulatory requirements
Assist with grant applications, reporting and compliance for government-funded programs
Maintain detailed records to support R&D claims and audits
8. Team Leadership and Development
Manage, supervise and mentor the finance team, including staff responsible for accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll and general accounting functions
Foster a culture of continuous improvement, accountability and professional development and build team capability to support the company's growth
Conduct performance reviews and support career progression for team members
9. Stakeholder Management and Compliance
Liaise with external stakeholders including banks, insurance providers, accounting firms and advisers
Support CFO in managing banking relationships and facility negotiations
Where suitable, the role may include Company Secretarial responsibilities
Over time, the right applicant will have promotion opportunities into C-suite based roles
Ideal Candidate Profile
Essential Qualifications and Experience
Minimum 7 years' progressive accounting and finance experience in Australian companies, including at least 3-5 years in a senior accounting or financial controller role
CA (Chartered Accountant), CPA (Certified Practising Accountant) or IPA qualification (or international equivalent) is essential
Proven experience managing external audits and statutory financial reporting in accordance with AASB
Strong technical accounting knowledge across consolidations, revenue recognition, inventory, fixed assets and financial statement preparation
Demonstrated experience with accounting systems, particularly Xero or similar cloud-based platforms
Advanced Excel skills including financial modelling, pivot tables and complex formulas
Preferred Experience
Experience with ERP systems implementation or optimisation (please detail in your application)
Understanding of corporate governance frameworks and best practices (please detail in your application)
Experience in R&D financial management, including tax incentive claims and grant reporting (please detail in your application)
Exposure to multi-entity group reporting and inter-company transactions
Previous experience in early-stage companies of a high-growth nature (i.e. start-ups) and / or companies that have liquidity events (i.e. Initial Public Offering or Trade Sale)
Previous experience in FMCG, food manufacturing or sustainability-focused businesses
