The MayalaRanger Coordinator coordinates the operational delivery of the Mayala ranger program. This role involves coordinating a newly established ranger group made up of predominantly women rangers (76% employment target). Most of the rangers will be new to their traineeships, requiring strong support, mentoring, and capacity development. This position will assist in the delivery of their annual IRP works plan, as set by Mayala Traditional Owners. The works plan is made up of a diverse range of cultural and natural resource management activities, including threatened and pest species management, preservation and management of cultural sites and water places, improving communication and awareness of visitor management protocols and reef and sea country management. The Rangers will be expected to participate in Conservation and Ecosystem Management (CAEM) courses and Marine Vessel training. Undertaking numerous on country trips camping on remote islands and vessels with senior traditional owners, will be a core part of the role.
We are looking for a dynamic and resilient individual with proven skills and capacity in Indigenous engagement, land and sea cultural and natural resource management, project management and administration. You will need to be a team leader who can engage with a wide range of external stakeholders. You should be able to work independently whilst assuring proper consultation is maintained with the Mayala Traditional owners and knowledge holders.
Mayala Baaliboor (Country) is an extensive network of islands, interconnecting sea, reefs, submerged lands, sandbars, seabeds and saltwater in the Buccaneer Archipelago and King Sound off the West Kimberley coast: an area recognised as being biologically diverse and culturally significant.
The position is based in Broome/Ardyaloon (One Arm Point) in the West Kimberley region of Western Australia. This position also requires working in remote island locations across Mayala Baaliboor (country), including extensive travel by vessel and overnight camping in rugged field conditions.
DUTIES
* Establish and conduct recruitment of a casual / part time employment pool of Mayala Rangers with the support of the KLC and Mayala HCAC
* Plan for the implementation of the developing Mayala Ranger Program including approved workplans, workplace arrangements, transport and travel
* Supervise and coordinate the day-to-day activities of the Mayala Rangers once recruited to ensure delivery of the annual work plan
* Work closely with the Mayala IPA Coordinator, the Mayala HCAC, and Kimberley Land and Sea Management Unit staff to develop and monitor, and report on ranger activities
* Ensure effective day to day administrative management of the Ranger program, including timesheets, purchasing, casual ranger and Traditional Owner payments
* Plan, supervise and participate in field activities to remote sea country locations associated with completing the work plan including extended periods in the field and on vessels
* Work with IPA Coordinator and external organisations to develop partnerships and land and sea management projects and ensure appropriate governance, ownership and participation by Traditional Owners in these activities
* Work with and mentor the Rangers to develop their personal, workplace skills project management skills, leadership abilities including productive collaboration with the Land and Sea Management Unit support team.
* Support on-the-job training and liaise with the Ranger Training Coordinator and training organisations to enable appropriate professional learning outcomes for rangers
* Investigate fees for service opportunities and other projects that support the development and sustainability of the ranger group and Traditional Owner aspirations
* Assist researchers to engage in approved on-country research with Rangers and other Traditional Owners, and direct research requests through appropriate channels
* Ensure high level responsibility taken by rangers for the care, maintenance and safekeeping of equipment and resources used and be ultimately responsible for the group's assets.
* Ensure compliance with cultural protocols and KLC Policy and Procedures at all times, including the promotion of safe working practices and instruction of Rangers in OH&S policy and procedures
* Participate and assist in KLC and Mayala events as required, including Land and Sea Management Unit meetings, Native Title meetings, regional forums and the KLC AGM;
* Other tasks as directed by authorised KLC personnel or representatives.
SELECTION CRITERIA
* Tertiary qualification and/or relevant experience in Environmental/ecology/conservation Science, Anthropology, Social science/community development or other related field
* Managing small teams and coordinating on-ground natural and cultural resource management projects, preferably with Indigenous organisations and in remote regions of Australia
* Experience and confidence in working with Aboriginal communities, understanding and knowledge of Aboriginal social/cultural challenges in Northern Australia, community empowerment, training and development
* Experience in working independently with minimal supervision in a remote area and demonstrated capacity to remain focused, positive and organised in a challenging work environment
* Good communication, negotiation and community consultation skills including ability to work with an advisory group and as a member of a team
* Experience in project management including budgeting, planning, supporting grant writing, reporting and acquittals
* High Proficiency in administration, reporting, computing and Microsoft Office suite.
* Current valid driver's licence and experience operating vehicles and/or heavy duty machinery in remote off road conditions
* Must be physically fit and able to coordinate and support on country camping activities in the Mayala Remote Islands / Coastal context for trips of up to a week at a time
* A Working with Children's Check (WWCC) or ability to obtain one
