Role
The assistant principal reports directly to the principal.
Assistant principals have a primary responsibility for the management of significant areas or functions within the school to ensure the effective development, provision and evaluation of the school's education program. In exercising the responsibility, assistant principals will have the authority to make all significant decisions relating to the program, budget and staff relating to their area of designated responsibility within the framework of the school's strategic plan, policies and budget. Assistant principals will contribute to the overall management of the school through involvement in policy formulation and decision making.
The management of significant school program or functional areas in schools involve assistant principals in the analysis of the needs of students and the translation of state educational policy and frameworks into appropriate education programs to meet the needs of all students.
Typically assistant principals will be responsible for the effective use of the teaching staff and program budget of a defined area of the school's operation and for the oversight and leadership of the educational programs provided utilising these resources.
Responsibilities
Typically, assistant principals perform one or more of the following functions:
1. supervision and coordination of the work of senior curriculum or level coordinators;
2. allocation of budgets, positions of responsibility and other resources within the area of responsibility;
3. supervision of the delivery of teaching programs;
4. management of programs to improve the knowledge and experience of staff;
5. responsibility for general discipline matters beyond the management of classroom teachers and year level coordinators;
6. contribute to the overall management of the school;
Who May Apply
Teachers currently registered or eligible for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching and qualified to teach and/or have demonstrated experience in the curriculum area(s) specified for the position.

VIT LANTITE
To be eligible for employment, transfer or promotion in the principal or teacher class a person must have provisional or full registration from the Victorian Institute of Teaching. In addition, from 3 August 2020, to be eligible for employment in the principal class or teacher class, a person who graduated from a Victorian Initial Teacher Education program after 1 July 2016, must demonstrate that they have passed the literacy and numeracy test for initial teacher education (LANTITE) requirements. This condition is satisfied where the LANTITE requirement is part of the Victorian Initial Teacher Education program completed by the person.

Established in 1954 Herne Hill Primary School is located in North Geelong and has a current enrolment of 266 students. The school has a low-mid socio-economic profile and a low proportion of EAL students.
Herne Hill Primary School also has a co-located kindergarten providing opportunities for partnerships and effective transitions. Bethany Kindergarten Services operates the kindergarten.
The core purpose of our school is to provide a comprehensive education for all students through effective communication, strong collaboration and the application of a range of teaching and learning strategies within a safe and inclusive environment that enables students to reach their academic, social and emotional potential.
An emphasis on literacy and numeracy is evident through the school’s teaching and learning programs and staff continue to develop and extend their knowledge of the Victorian Curriculum. Specialist classes in Performing Arts, Visual Arts, Digital Technologies, Physical Education and LOTE (Italian) are also taught as part of the weekly program.
Aligning with the current focus on student voice, student leaders play an active role in the school by contributing to school processes and leadership opportunities in an authentic way.

Current enrolment: Our current enrolment is 266. This has been steady rise over the years. We face the challenge of increasing enrolment with limited space.
The school, like all schools, is zoned. We do face a positive situation of being a sought after school for children to attend. This does present dome interesting challenges of verification of residency, cases of living with relatives, short term rentals, parents working in the area etc.
PSD Funded students : We currently have 5 Education Support staff working with students.
Literacy Support Program : We also run a Reading Assistance Program for identified student in years F-4 with particular areas of deficiency.
Welfare: The school has a welfare officer ;
