We are seeking to appoint up to 4.5 WTE fixed-term locum Consultants in Emergency Medicine to join our established consultant body. These posts are funded as we are transition to an increasingly Consultant delivered service.
The appointees will be integral members of the consultant team, contributing to the delivery of high-quality emergency care and supporting the service during a period of increased demand. A key focus of these posts will be to enhance senior consultant presence Monday to Friday evenings, ensuring timely decision-making, supporting patient flow, and maintaining safe, effective care during peak activity.
In addition to general Emergency Department duties, the postholders will also undertake initial assessment of patients arriving in our streaming hub, providing rapid senior input at the earliest stage of the patient journey.
This is an exciting opportunity for experienced Emergency Medicine clinicians to contribute to strengthening senior medical cover during a period of exceptional demand, while working in a supportive and forward-looking consultant body.
Main duties of the job
The clinical work comprises the receipt, resuscitation, initial treatment, and diagnosis of undifferentiated emergency attendees presenting 24 hours per day to a modern Emergency Department. In these fixed-term roles, there will be a particular emphasis on providing enhanced senior consultant presence into weekday evenings (Monday-Friday), to support patient flow and safe decision-making at times of peak demand.
You will provide supervision for resident clinical staff working in the ED during shop floor duties, and flexibility during working hours to further support the department if required. There are regular consultant-led ED safety rounds to ensure that all patients in the department have a clear management plan in place at all times, as well as a focus on comfort and dignity.
You will be supported in developing and maintaining your professional clinical, educational, and academic interests.
The Consultants as a group, in conjunction with the Specialist Registrars in the Department, organise and take part in teaching programmes for junior medical staff, medical students, nurses, and paramedics who train in the department. Various other ad hoc teaching arrangements may be made through personal contacts.
