Legal Counsel
* Significant in-house role as a trusted advisor
* Communities value centric organisation
* Supportive and progressive culture, flexible working options.
This is a rare opportunity to step into an in-house Legal Counsel role where you’ll be trusted to advise, influence and enable across the group businesses. If making a difference in your community matters, this could be the role for you…
About the role
Working closely with and reporting to the Company Secretary and General Counsel, you’ll partner with leaders and executives to provide clear, pragmatic legal advice that supports confident decision-making by the group and strong commercial outcomes.
You’ll work across a diverse portfolio including commercial, construction and property matters, governance and regulatory compliance, water law, privacy and freedom of information, integrity matters, claims and dispute resolution, and incident response. You’ll play a hands-on role in negotiating and managing contracts, overseeing litigation and insurance matters, engaging external legal providers when needed, and monitoring legislative change to ensure Barwon Water remains compliant and future-focused.
This role thrives on autonomy, enjoys navigating complexity and ambiguity, and is comfortable influencing outcomes in a values-driven, public-sector environment. Your ability to translate legal risk into practical, solutions-focused advice will be critical to helping the organisation pursue opportunities while managing risk.
* Position Description
About you
You are a senior lawyer with in-house legal counsel experience, comfortable operating as a trusted business partner. You bring strong commercial judgement, confidence in your advice, and the ability to work independently while building collaborative relationships across a large, operational organisational group.
You have broad legal experience, particularly in commercial, construction and property law, and are confident advising on governance, regulatory frameworks, disputes and claims. You communicate clearly and persuasively, making complex legal issues easy for non-legal stakeholders to understand and act on.
Known for your stakeholder management skills, you influence thoughtfully, build trust quickly and handle sensitive or high-risk matters with calm judgement. You’re curious, resilient and adaptable, with a strong sense of accountability and a genuine interest in supporting organisational outcomes rather than simply identifying risk.
Your qualifications will be put to the test in this challenging role, but your ability to manage ambiguity and experience will be key to your ongoing success and development.
