About us

Mookai Rosie Bi‑Bayan, founded in the 1980s by Aunty Rose Richards, is a leading health service supporting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families from Cape York, the NPA and the Torres Strait while they are in Cairns for medical care. We provide culturally safe accommodation for women and children through our 24‑bed Health Accommodation centre, offering a welcoming and supportive environment during treatment. Our Mookai Family Health clinic delivers comprehensive primary healthcare, including midwifery‑led antenatal and postnatal care, sexual and reproductive health, chronic disease management, social and emotional wellbeing support, vaccinations, and health promotion. Together, our services ensure families have access to holistic, culturally sensitive care that promotes their health and wellbeing throughout their stay.

About the role

The Community Liaison Officer plays a key role in fostering strong, culturally safe communication between Mookai Rosie Bi Bayan (MRBB), our clients, and our healthcare partners. This position supports Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families from Cape York by strengthening information-sharing pathways that enable holistic health and wellbeing.

You will contribute to improved health outcomes by advocating for clients, assisting them to navigate the health system, building and maintaining effective partnerships, and ensuring access to appropriate and culturally safe healthcare services. Central to this role is a commitment to the principles of self‑determination and the values of Aboriginal Community Controlled Health.

Candidate selection criteria

* Certificate III or IV in Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander Primary Health Care, not essential but highly advantageous.
* Demonstrated experience working with Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander individuals, families and communities, particularly in a health or wellbeing context within the Cairns and Hinterland Health and Hospital Services catchment.
* Experience acting as a cultural liaison between community members and health professionals.
* Knowledge of local health services, referral pathways, and community support agencies.
* Excellent verbal and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with Elders, families, community members and health professionals.
* Proficiency in computer-based programs such as Microsoft Office Suite.
* Effective time management and organisational skills, with a proactive and reliable approach to work responsibilities.
* Current Working with Children Check (Blue Card)
* Current Queensland Drivers Licence.
