Overview

Join to apply for the Lead School Psychologist role at Department of Education, Western Australia. This is a permanent full-time position commencing Term 1, 2026.

The Pilbara is one of eight education regions within the Western Australian Department of Education. The region consists of 29 public schools across four Local Government Authorities and includes major towns such as Port Hedland, South Hedland, Karratha, Onslow, Newman and Tom Price. The region features diverse landscapes and communities across more than 507,896 square kilometres.

The role requires regular travel within and outside the region (including overnight stays). The successful applicant will work under policies and guidelines of the Department and the Psychology Board of Australia’s professional standards.

Responsibilities

- Provide professional leadership and support to a team of school psychologists across the Pilbara region.
- Collaborate with the other Lead School Psychologist to develop the team and lead professional development and practice standards.
- Ensure the quality of psychological practice meets Department and Board standards and lead contemporary psychological practice.
- Provide direct advice to the Director of Schools, Principals and the system on complex issues and incident management.
- Lead in providing supervision to provisionally registered psychologists to achieve Competency Framework standards.
- Support and supervise the delivery of services across mental health, learning, behaviour and disability domains.
- Potentially provide board-approved supervision; negotiate placement terms if applicable (ASSP status required for permanent appointment).

Requirements and Eligibility

- Advanced Skills School Psychologist (ASSP) status is required for permanent appointment. Candidates with ASSP status or those eligible may apply; if no ASSP candidate is identified, a 12-month fixed-term appointment may be offered to a candidate without ASSP status.
- Hold or be eligible for general registration with the Psychology Board of Australia.
- Australian or New Zealand citizenship, permanent residence, or valid visa with work rights for the term of the appointment.
- Obtain a valid Working With Children Check before starting; consent to a Nationally Coordinated Criminal History Check and a current Screening Clearance Number from the Department of Education’s Screening Unit before starting.
- Possess Advanced Skills School Psychologist status for permanent appointment (or be eligible as above).
