Primary objective

To work with the teaching team, mentors, and health professionals to assist students with all aspects of their wellbeing and

engagement in education. This will include developing a professional relationship with marginalised young people for educational

outcomes, family support, social and emotional support, and community engagement within a trauma informed framework.

Context statement

Katherine High School is the only government secondary school in Katherine. It provides an educational service to students from

Year 7 to Year 12. In the Senior Years students are provided with multiple achievement pathways to ensure they receive the

education most appropriate to their needs. The school caters to a diverse population from a range of different social, educational

and cultural backgrounds. Katherine High School has an offsite program, Katherine Flexible Learning and Engagement Centre and

provides an alternate program for disengaged and at-risk teenagers in the Katherine area. The school takes great pride in its

inclusive practices and works hard to live up to our core values: Inclusion, Respect, Effort and Resilience.

Key duties and responsibilities

1. Provide in class support collaborating with teachers within a trauma informed framework.

2. Work collaboratively and flexibly to support the operation of a safe, empowering and culturally inclusive environment that

works to engage young people in education.

3. Establish and maintain appropriate interpersonal relationships between students, the school, families, and community.

4. Operate within a coaching and counselling framework to support attendance in education and training.

5. Maintain appropriate records, case notes, and prepare reports as required.

Selection criteria

Essential

1. Proven ability to work within a trauma informed model providing support to young people who may experience significant

wellbeing and mental health issues and behaviours associated with experiencing complex trauma.

2. Demonstrated cultural competency, and knowledge of current youth, social and community issues affecting marginalised school

aged youth and their families.

3. Demonstrated commitment to working within an evidence-based education framework to empower young people to stay

connected to their educational journey.

4. Demonstrated organisational, time management and problem-solving skills, ability to maintain confidentiality and the capacity

to show initiative when dealing with complex situations.

1. Proven ability to work collaboratively and communicate effectively within a multidisciplinary team including education staff,

health professionals, families, non-government organisations and members of the broader community to support educational

and vocational pathways.
