Position overview
The Bureau is seeking an electronics professional to join the team at the Kennaook / Cape Grim Baseline Air Pollution Station (KCGBAPS) and apply their technical expertise to assist in the maintenance and development of KCGBAPS operations.
This Technical Officer position, within the Observing Systems and Operations (OSO) Program, is unique in its global reach. KCGBAPS is a critical component of Australia's contribution to the Global Atmospheric Watch (GAW) Network. Data collected at this site underpins Australia's obligations under the Paris Agreement, other important international environmental conventions and to the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO). Therefore, the successful applicant will directly contribute to the leading edge of atmospheric composition measurement.
The role involves working closely with scientists from CSIRO, ANSTO and several collaborating universities as well as station technical officers. Daily work includes tasks such as: calibrations of laboratory instruments and systems, collecting air samples using specialised techniques, data entry and troubleshooting instrument outages. They will be required to travel daily to KCGBAPS from Smithton with station staff in the Bureau EV during working hours. On call duties may be required.
The successful candidate will be expected to meet the world-class standards expected of KCGBAPS and ensure they utilise best practice with respect to safe work practices and safety documentation. They will have a strong work ethic, eye for detail, good communication skills and proficient computing skills. They will be capable of working with limited supervision to support this critical mission.
The Technical Officer will report directly to the Officer in Charge (EL2L).
Role responsibilities
* The responsibilities of the role include but are not limited to:
* Participate in the installation, operational support, and maintenance of the instrumentation within KCGBAPS laboratories and field sites.
* Investigate, evaluate and report on Bureau instrumentation and equipment operational problems.
* Take corrective action and maintain operational technical statistics and associated databases required for this purpose.
* Document and report on equipment quality assurance programs, maintenance, transfers and repairs and associated databases/systems.
* Participate in the development, implementation, maintenance, documentation and evaluation of hardware and software systems.
* Develop and adapt embedded software to integrate and automate data collected at KCGBAPS in direct collaboration with the Laboratory Manager and Lead Scientists.
* Contribute to technical documentation including procedures, safe work instructions, risk assessments, technical manuals, and version description documents.
* Working at heights is required to maintain anemometers and air inlets.

Mandatory qualifications
* A Certificate III (AQF Level 3 or above) electronics or electrical preferred from an Australian educational institution, OR
* Relevant experience and training, which enables the employee to competently perform the duties at this level, OR
* Other comparable qualifications, which are appropriate to the duties
Merit pool
The selection process will establish a merit pool that may be used to fill similar positions within 18 months.
