The Role
HDR is seeking an experienced Senior Structural Engineer to join our National Building Engineering Services (BES) group in Melbourne or Sydney. This role focuses on the design, coordination, and delivery of structural engineering services across a broad range of building projects within a multidisciplinary consultancy environment.
You will act as a key technical contributor within project teams, responsible for independently delivering defined structural scopes of work while collaborating closely with discipline leads, project managers, and other stakeholders.
This is a hands‑on, delivery‑focused role, ideal for an experienced structural engineer who enjoys producing high‑quality design solutions and taking ownership of their work.
Key Responsibilities
* Independently develop structural design packages from concept through to detailed design.
* Undertake detailed structural analysis and design calculations.
* Prepare coordinated, high‑quality structural documentation aligned with project and quality requirements.
* Collaborate with architects and other engineering disciplines to develop integrated and buildable design solutions.
* Ensure delivery aligns with project scope, program and quality expectations.
* Participate in and contribute to design reviews, incorporating feedback into final deliverables.
* Support continuous improvement through development of technical standards, tools and processes.
* Assist with construction‑phase services, including site inspections, design clarifications and technical support.
* Build and maintain strong client relationships, supporting repeat work and new opportunities.
* Provide technical guidance and mentoring to junior engineers.
* Participate in broader office, business and corporate initiatives.
Qualifications & Experience
* Bachelor’s degree in Civil / Structural Engineering.
* Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) or eligibility to obtain within Engineers Australia.
* Typically 6–12 years’ experience in structural design within a consulting environment.
* Strong background in building structure design of data centres, commercial, industrial, health, defence, education, sports and aquatic or mixed‑use projects.
* Proven experience independently delivering complete structural design packages.
* Strong understanding of Australian Standards and NCC requirements (e.g. AS 1170 series, AS 3600, AS 4100, AS 3700, AS 2870, etc).
* Experience with site inspections, construction support and design coordination.
* Capability to operate at discipline‑lead level on projects.
* Strong communication skills and confidence engaging with clients and project stakeholders.
* Interest in developing greater exposure to project delivery, resourcing, and commercial aspects.
Software Experience (preferred)
* Structural Toolkit, SpaceGass, Strand 7, ETABS, RAM, PTD, RAPT, etc.
* Bluebeam, BIM collaboration tools.
* Knowledge of Revit / AutoCAD.
