General Manager State Government Relations

Report to the Executive General Manager, Government Relations.

Overview

Set and drivenbn's enterprise‐wide engagement strategy with state and territory governments, providing a clear, consistent, and strategic approach to building trusted relationships across Australia. Shapenbn's position on policy, funding and regulatory matters, influencing outcomes over a 3‐5‐year horizon while strengthening connections with Ministers, advisers and departments.

Lead a nationally distributed team of senior government relations professionals, delivering clarity, direction and cohesion aligned to state ownership. Guide engagement across all states, maintain direct involvement in senior stakeholder relationships, and support executive‐level interactions.

Play a critical role in shaping outcomes fornbn, identifying and progressing partnership and co‐investment opportunities with state and territory governments, and ensuring a coordinated response in complex or crisis scenarios. Work closely with the Chief Corporate Affairs Officer, other Executive Committee members, the Federal Government Relations team and Corporate Affairs to provide strategic insight that informs enterprise decision‐making and strengthens alignment between internal priorities and external expectations.

Key Qualifications

• Deep experience within ministerial offices and/or government departments, with a strong understanding of how state and territory governments operate, make decisions and engage with industry.
• Confidence navigating complex policy and regulatory environments, with a strategic, considered approach to influencing outcomes that balances commercial priorities with public interests.
• Ability to build trusted relationships at the senior level, grounded in credibility, insight and a collaborative, inclusive style.
• Leadership experience building clarity and alignment across geographically dispersed teams, fostering a supportive environment where people feel connected, valued and empowered to contribute.
• Calm, thoughtful approach to complexity, with a genuine commitment to partnership, purpose and delivering outcomes for communities across Australia.
