ROLE
This role is specifically dedicated to supporting a secondary male student, providing both personal care and educational support throughout the school day. The successful applicant will work closely with teaching staff to ensure the student's safety, wellbeing, and full participation in the school program.
Fluency in Dari and English is essential to support effective communication with the student and family.
Performs and/or supervises tasks that are carried out in accordance with guidelines, accepted practice and school policy. This may include the supervision and coordination of other education support class staff within the work area or educational program. Supervision and coordination would be limited to ensuring routine tasks are performed to required standards.
Undertakes medical intervention support tasks or other specialised student/teacher support roles that require specific training that must be updated from time to time. The role is for a specific purpose for which there will be direct accountability as opposed to support roles that are carried out by a range of staff performing routine tasks under direction.
Performs technical tasks that require a sound knowledge of basic technical and/or scientific principles that are used to develop and adapt work methods and make judgments where there are clear guidelines and limited options.
An education support class position supports the educational services being provided to students but must not include duties of teaching as defined in clause 2.6.1 of the Education and Training Reform Act 2006 (Vic) or its successor.
Attendance during the school vacation period is not required for this position.
RESPONSIBILITIES
* Provides basic physical care and wellbeing support for students such as toileting, meals, and lifting
* Provides medical intervention support to a student/s, under specific conditions, with appropriate training and guidance
* Provides basic support and supervision for individuals or groups of up to 4 students within a classroom setting
* Communicating with student/s to support comprehension of basic tasks and information
* Supports communication between teachers and parents
* Provides routine support for teachers including assisting with planning of student routines
* Communicates with teachers on routine matters related to students and/or other responsibilities
* Addresses immediate behavioural presentations relating to specific students within a classroom setting aligned to school policy and procedure
KEY SELECTION CRITERIA
* SC1. Demonstrated capacity to undertake routine and specialised teacher assistant support tasks across a range of work areas.
* SC2. Demonstrated capacity to work co-operatively and communicate effectively within a team environment with a wide range of individuals including teachers, other support staff, therapists, parents and students.
* SC3. Demonstrated understanding of the principles of effective behaviour management for students with an intellectual and physical disability who might exhibit severe challenging behaviours.
* SC4. Demonstrated experience and/or willingness to give physical assistance with personal care/self-care responsibilities.
* SC5. Demonstrated understanding of intellectual and physical disability and its impact on learning.
