Research Opportunity in History

The proposed research project aims to investigate the extraordinary popularity of the Asterix comic book series across at least two of the following three case studies: Canada, the US, and the UK from the 1960s onwards.

Mirroring the central questions of the ARC-funded project regarding the series' attractions for readers and the meanings given to the series will open up a sociocultural history of the post-war period in these countries.

Translations transposed meanings into different national contexts, and jokes were translated to resonate in different national contexts. This is of particular interest as the series enjoyed enormous success in the UK and Canada but not in the US.

The successful candidate will be required to undertake a comparative study, discussing their research proposal with Professor Julie Kalman before submitting an expression of interest.

Expressions of interest shall comprise a cover letter including a brief statement of the applicant's suitability, a brief research proposal not exceeding 750 words in length, and demonstrating some understanding of the area of research.

Applicants are required to familiarise themselves with the eligibility requirements before deciding whether they should apply.

The project aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the historical context and cultural significance of the Asterix comic book series in different countries.

The Monash University campus will serve as the base for this research opportunity.

* Strong research skills and fieldwork experience
* Expertise in historical methodology

Selection committee will prioritise applicants who hold an Australian or equivalent international honours or master's degree both in a relevant field with a significant research component and with first-class honours (H1 awarded).
