About us

Nature Glenelg Trust is a regional environmental not-for-profit, currently employing 23 full or part-time staff and a dozen casual staff, focused on achieving great things on the ground for the environment. We operate across south‐eastern Australia, with offices in Warrnambool and Mt Gambier, and have staff based in a range of other locations in SA, Victoria, NSW and Tasmania. Our staff are experts in a range of ecological disciplines ranging from restoration ecology, aquatic ecology, birds, invertebrates, native vegetation, fish, frogs and everything in between. Most of all, our staff are committed to ecological restoration and making a real difference for species and their habitats.

As well as working with private landholders, other conservation organisations and a range of government and NRM agencies, we also own ten properties, where we showcase our work and demonstrate best practice ecological restoration and conservation approaches.

We are implementing a range of exciting threatened‐mammal recovery projects across our focal region, which includes western Victoria and south‐eastern SA, and are currently looking to add to the mammal ecology capacity of our team based in our Mount Gambier office alongside our community nursery.

About the position

The position offers a unique opportunity to lead the development and implementation of our mammal conservation projects, including a reintroduction program at our predator‐proof sanctuary at Mt Vandyke, together with a range of mammal monitoring and conservation activities across our other restoration reserves.

The Senior Ecologist Small Mammal Reintroductions is a senior position and would therefore suit someone with at least 5 years post‐graduate experience. As a senior ecologist in our organisation, you will assume responsibility for the management of projects that support your own work and the broader objectives of the organisation. Although this position does not currently supervise staff, all senior ecologists in the organisation take a leadership role in guiding the work programmes of other staff.

We have the flexibility to negotiate a full or part‐time role for the right applicant who will implement projects across NGT's network of restoration reserves, located across western Victoria and south‐eastern South Australia. The successful person will work closely with a broad range of stakeholders, so excellent communication and relationship building skills are a must.

Flexible working arrangements, including some working from home, may be negotiated but, given the location of projects and the needs of the organisation, the position will preferably be based in our Mount Gambier office in South Australia. As a regionally focused organisation, we take pride in the fact that our staff are embedded in the communities in which we work.

About the person

The position will suit someone who is a self‐starter with a passion for native wildlife, reintroduction science and furthering our knowledge of how complex ecosystems function. You will be seeking the opportunity to build a conservation and reintroduction program from the ground up and understand that grassroots action, informed by sound science, is the way to achieve conservation outcomes.

Working for NGT, you will have the freedom to pursue creative and flexible ways of operating and the opportunity to work amongst others who share your passion for the natural environment. We value innovation and creative solutions.

Excellent communication and negotiation skills, including a track record building positive and productive relationships with agency staff, the local community and funding bodies, are critical for success in this position, as we work alongside a range of stakeholders to develop new ways of approaching threatened mammal conservation.

Cultural fit is an important consideration for our organisation, and we highly value commitment to the environment, having a can‐do attitude and the ability to work collaboratively within a small but enthusiastic and hard‐working team. More specific information about the roles and responsibilities of the position can be found in the attached Role Description.
