This senior nursing position provides expert consultancy, guidance, and leadership in the care of older people with complex health needs, and supports best-practice care for patients, carers, and healthcare teams.
Responsibilities
- Provide expert clinical consultancy to patients, carers, and healthcare professionals in the care of older persons with complex health needs.
- Collaborate with the Nursing Unit Manager, medical teams, Allied Health, and support staff to implement harm-minimisation strategies following geriatric assessments.
- Deliver specialist consultations and develop management plans for patients with cognitive impairment, including challenging behaviours.
- Advocate for holistic, person-centred care that respects individual patient needs and rights.
- Facilitate collaboration with interagency and community liaison services, including Residential Aged Care Facilities and private providers.
- Lead the development and review of policies and procedures relating to older person care across Maitland Hospital and the broader health district.
- Collate and report older person care data, ensuring timely submission to Local Executives, the health district, and the Ministry of Health.
- Act as a senior nursing resource, supporting knowledge transfer, mentorship, and professional development of less experienced practitioners and health care team members.
Qualifications and Experience
- Registered Nurse with current Authority to Practice with AHPRA, with at least 5 years of full-time equivalent post-registration experience.
- Post-registration nursing qualifications in Older Persons (approved).
- Advanced clinical expertise in the care of older persons and a proven track record in policy development, data reporting, and service improvement initiatives.
- Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively with patients, families, and multidisciplinary teams.
- Commitment to improving outcomes for older people and to holistic, rights-based care.
- Experience in mentoring and leading others.
