Are you experienced in operating heavy machinery and looking for a hands-on role in waste management? Wellington Shire Council is seeking a skilled and motivated Plant Operator to join our Natural Environment and Parks team in a permanent full-time position.
About the Role
Working within the Waste & Sustainability team, this role is based at the Kilmany Landfill & Resource Recovery Centre. You will be responsible for the day-to-day operations of the landfill, ensuring compliance with all EPA licence and legislative requirements.
Key tasks include:
Operating heavy plant and machinery for waste acceptance, compaction, and covering
Strategic placement of soil stockpiles and wall protection layers
Installing litter screens and collecting loose litter to prevent offsite pollution
Conducting waste spot checks and ensuring permitted waste is accepted safely
Performing routine maintenance on vehicles and equipment
Completing safety checklists and maintaining a clean, safe work area
We are looking for someone who:
* Has experience in landfill or similar operations and machinery use
* Is reliable, safety-conscious, and a team player
* Can follow procedures and work independently when needed
* Has strong communication skills and can build positive relationships
* Can perform heavy manual work and understands safe work practices
This is a varied, active role where your skills and attitude will help support essential community waste services.
What You Need
* A current Victorian heavy rigid truck driver's licence
* Experience and competency (or ability to obtain certificate of competency) in using at least two types of landfill machinery (for example: landfill compactor, loader, excavator, dump truck, or water truck)
* A good understanding of workplace safety and environmental rules and regulations
* The ability to use a computer, tablet or mobile device and enter information accurately
* Physically fit to do manual outdoor work in all weather conditions
* Experience working at a landfill or transfer station is desirable
