Energy Optimisation Specialist
This position is located at our Whyalla site and reports directly to the Power and Services Operations Leader. As an Energy Controller, your primary responsibility will be to oversee and optimize the production and distribution of steam, power, fuel gases, oxygen, nitrogen, argon, and salt water across the Whyalla Steelworks and its associated mining operations.
The role is focused on ensuring these utilities are delivered safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively, supporting the broader operational performance and sustainability of the site.
Your Main Responsibilities Will Include:
* Ensure smooth and efficient plant operations by continuously monitoring production, supply status, and energy balance; taking timely corrective actions; maintaining required output levels; and coordinating closely with natural gas suppliers and customers for accurate forecasting aligned with the business plan.
* Provide timely updates regarding changes to plant supply or plant configuration, especially during system disturbances or planned maintenance.
* Engage with operators to identify, escalate, and resolve utility-related issues that may impact production
* Maintain effective communication during shift handovers to ensure continuity of plant operations and awareness of any operational changes.
* Liaising with internal stakeholders to coordinate responses to breakdowns and planned shutdowns, while ensuring timely communication when supply or quality deviates from agreed Service Level Agreements (SLAs).
* Act as a point of contact for communicating with other departments regarding high power pricing impacts, ensuring all relevant stakeholders are informed and appropriate operational adjustments are made.
* Actively participating in incident investigations to identify root causes and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Required Skills & Qualifications
We're looking for a skilled and safety-focused professional with proven experience in power plant operations. You will have a strong background in using by-product gases and supplementary firing for boilers, alongside a deep understanding of heavy industry operations and energy optimisation for both power generation and importation.
To thrive in this role, you must have strong attention to detail, the ability to make sound decisions when dealing with competing interests, and excellent communication skills to effectively engage with both internal customers and external suppliers.
Candidates must either be currently residing in Whyalla or be willing to relocate.
Desirable Qualifications & Experience
* Advanced Boiler and Turbine Operator certification (mandatory)
* Minimum of 5 years' experience working in a power plant environment
* Relevant tertiary qualification in engineering or a related field (highly desirable)
Techincal Skills & Competencies
* Proficiency in operating plant DCS and PLC systems
* Solid understanding of manufacturing processes and energy systems
* Demonstrated experience in operational management within a manufacturing environment
* Working knowledge of steam and power generation processes
* Ability to manage and balance gas distribution across the site
* Strong problem-solving, conflict resolution, and negotiation skills
* Competency with computer systems and digital tools used in plant operations
* Clear and confident communication skills across all levels of the business
