**The Role**
The International Labour Team operates in a dynamic and fast-paced environment and works closely with stakeholders in the department and across government, to support Australia's engagement with the International Labour Organization (ILO). The ILO is a tripartite agency of the United Nations dedicated to improving economic and working conditions through labour standards, policies and programs that promote decent work for all.
The principal objective of the Department's engagement with the ILO is to advance, protect and promote Australia's broader national and international labour interests, by ensuring Australia's views are reflected in the ILO's deliberations and outcomes. It is also a key platform for Australia to promote the multilateral system and rules-based international order.
The team supports the Minister-Counsellor in Geneva to engage effectively with the ILO and leads on ratification of labour standards domestically, working closely with the Australian Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Australian Council of Trade Unions and relevant commonwealth, state and territory government agencies. The team also provides policy advice on labour standards within free trade and other economic agreements, such as the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework.
The successful applicant will have extensive policy experience, an understanding of the workplace relations environment, demonstrated ability to work with a range of stakeholders and strong leadership skills. Experience in international engagement and an understanding of Australia's broader international policy environment is desirable.
**Skills and Capabilities**
- Policy and strategy development for Australia's engagement with the ILO to reflect Australia's interests domestically and internationally.
- Lead and support on policy projects as part of Australia's membership of the ILO, including ratification of priority conventions and protocols and reporting against our obligations.
- Represent Australia at key international labour meetings, including the annual ILO International Labour Conference and sessions of the ILO's Governing Body.
- Prepare high quality advice such as talking points, departmental and ministerial briefing, submissions, cables, for senior executives and ministers.
- Pro-actively engage with and influence internal and external stakeholders to meet our policy and strategic objectives.
- Arrange visits, meetings and events, including travel, communications, stakeholder outreach and other tasks as required.
- Demonstrate a commitment to delivering high quality work and oversee operational priorities while leading a team of staff.
**The Opportunity**
This position is available to Ongoing Department of Employment and Workplace Relations and APS employees as a temporary transfer at level or a temporary performance (Acting) opportunity for a period of 6 months.
