You will provide expert mechanical judgement to resolve complex or conflicting repair options and ensure decisions balance safety, compliance, cost, and operational needs. In addition to this you will supervise workshop staff and uphold Council's obligations under the Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL), Chain of Responsibility (CoR), and Transport for NSW (TfNSW) registration and inspection requirements.

What We can offer you:

* Work/life balance working a 9-day fortnight
* Training and development opportunities
* Employee Assistance and Health & Wellbeing Programs

What we trust you to deliver:

* Plan, allocate, and oversee daily workshop operations, including job prioritisation, resource allocation, rostering, leave coordination, and workflow management to meet operational and statutory requirements.
* Manage all servicing, maintenance, repairs, diagnostics, and breakdown response for RFS machinery and Council fleet, ensuring efficient delivery of schedules, minimal downtime, and appropriate repair methodologies.
* Provide technical leadership and support, including authoritative mechanical advice, validation of mechanical recommendations, hands‐on assistance with complex tasks, and mentoring of mechanics, apprentices, and contractors.
* Ensure accurate maintenance documentation, including service records, work orders, defect reports, inspection records, and registration documentation, while maintaining auditable and compliant data.
* Maintain compliance with NSW WHS legislation, environmental requirements, and Council safety procedures, including leading risk assessments, managing incidents and corrective actions, and promoting a strong safety culture.
* Uphold Heavy Vehicle National Law (HVNL) and Chain of Responsibility (CoR) obligations, ensuring vehicles are roadworthy, defects are appropriately assessed and rectified, and staff understand and fulfil their compliance responsibilities.
* Manage vehicle registration and regulatory compliance, including TfNSW requirements, HVAIS inspections, ADR adherence, and ensuring accurate operator details, documentation, and registration records.
* Collaborate with internal teams, suppliers, contractors, and regulatory bodies, providing technical advice, supporting fleet planning, coordinating parts and stores operations, and aligning workshop activities with broader fleet compliance systems.

What you will need to be successful:

* Trade qualification as a Motor Mechanic, Diesel Fitter, or Heavy Vehicle Technician.
* Demonstrated experience diagnosing and resolving complex mechanical, electrical and hydraulic faults in a complex fleet.
* Proven ability to assess competing repair options and make informed technical decisions balancing safety, compliance, cost, and operational needs.
* Strong understanding of fleet maintenance, diagnostics, and workshop operations.
* Knowledge of HVNL, Chain of Responsibility, and heavy vehicle roadworthiness standards.
* Understanding of TfNSW registration, inspection, and compliance requirements.
* Ability to provide technical guidance to staff and validate repair approaches.
* Sound knowledge of WHS legislation and safe work practices.
