The Australian Government Graduate Program (AGGP) - Economist Stream, led by the Department of the Treasury and co-led by the Australian Public Service Commission (APSC), offers an exciting and unique opportunity to work closely with Australia's leading government economic policy analysts and forecasters.

About the Economist Stream
As an economist graduate you will engage in meaningful work and benefit from real-time experience in conducting research and contributing to policy development, economic modelling and forecasting, and providing advice to inform decision-making processes within government departments and agencies.
You will contribute to a range of government policy matters, including:
* conducting evidence-based research and analysis to inform policy development and service delivery
* advising on and contributing to fiscal, monetary, social, industry and environmental policies
* predicting and planning for economic change
* developing recommendations, policies and plans to improve the economy
* macroeconomic, industry and cost benefit analysis, economic forecasting and evaluation of government programs

Skills
The Economist Stream does not require graduates to have prior professional experience to apply. We're looking for graduates with strong analytical thinking and collaborative skills, who are flexible, curious and resilient and have strong written and communication skills.
If you bring transferable skills, a willingness to learn, and genuine curiosity, we want to hear from you. You might have developed these skills through experiences such as:
* part‐time or casual work
* group university assessments or projects
* volunteering, caring responsibilities or community involvement

Location
Most economist graduate positions are in Canberra, however there may be opportunities for placement in other capital cities across Australia, depending on the agency you are matched with. Relocation assistance may be provided by placement agencies as per their internal policies.

* you must be an Australian citizen at the time of application
* have completed an Australian Qualifications Framework Level 7 qualification (Bachelor degree), or higher equivalent by 31 December 2026. Relevant degrees include Economics, Econometrics or any degree with a major or minor in Economics.
* your most recent eligible qualifying degree has or will be completed within the last 5 years. For example, you have or will complete your degree between 1 January 2022 and 31 December 2026
* performed well in your studies to ensure you are competitive in the selection process
* willing and able to relocate to Canberra (or other state-based locations specified by participating agencies) for the duration of the graduate program
* undergo any police, character, health or other required checks

If your only qualifying degree is from an overseas university, you will need to provide a statement with your application verifying the recognition of your qualifications from an Australian state or territory government overseas qualifications unit. If you do not have the required evidence prior to applications closing, you can still apply. Attach a letter or email which outlines the steps you are taking to source your documentation. You will have to provide documented evidence prior to being offered a position.

The AGGP - Economist Stream is run independently of the Treasury Graduate Development Program recruitment process. You can apply for both the Treasury Graduate Program and the Economist Stream graduate recruitment processes - just make sure to check the eligibility requirements.

Application Question
"Working as an Economist Stream graduate in the APS involves researching issues, analysing data and providing economic policy advice that informs decisions. In 250 words or less, describe what attracts you to this type of work, which economic policy topic most interests you, and two skills you would apply to contribute to achieving these outcomes."
Notes
Successful applicants will be placed in a merit pool that will be considered by the APS and Commonwealth entities. Please note that agencies and departments will offer different employment conditions and graduate program features.
