The role
Reporting to the IT Director, the Data Governance Manager will lead the development and implementation of the Institute's organisation wide data governance strategy. This is a newly established role, created in response to the rapid growth and scale of our research data environment, which currently manages approximately 1.5 petabytes of diverse and complex data assets.
In this pivotal position, you will establish clear accountability for data stewardship, design scalable governance frameworks, and ensure compliance with legal, ethical and funding obligations. You will work closely with researchers, IT teams and executive leaders to enable secure, efficient and transparent data sharing; supporting data driven discovery while reducing administrative burden across the Institute. A Data Governance Officer role will be introduced in the future and will report to you once established.
What we will trust you with
* Leading the development and execution of the Institute's data governance strategy, aligned with research objectives and regulatory requirements
* Designing and implementing institute-wide data governance frameworks, policies and standards that support current and future data growth
* Establishing and chairing cross-functional data governance committees to drive accountability and consistency
* Defining data ownership, stewardship roles and escalation pathways across research divisions and operational teams
* Developing and enforcing data quality standards, metadata frameworks and data catalogues to improve data discoverability and reproducibility
* Overseeing data security, access controls, classification schemes and incident response processes
* Enabling secure internal and external data sharing through robust governance, agreements and collaboration frameworks
* Driving stakeholder engagement, training and cultural change to embed data governance best practice across the Institute
Does this sound like you?
* You hold an advanced degree in data science, information management, computer science or a related field
* At least five years' experience in data governance, data management or information governance roles
* You have successfully led the design and implementation of data governance frameworks in complex organisations
* Strong knowledge of data governance best practice and frameworks such as DAMA-DMBOK or DCAM
* Solid understanding of Australian and international privacy legislation and research ethics requirements
* Experienced in data quality, metadata management and data cataloguing approaches
* Confident working with highly diverse stakeholders, from researchers to executive leaders
* Able to communicate clearly and effectively, with the ability to influence, educate and build trust
