Westmead Hospital is a key facility of one of Australia’s largest major health and medical research precincts and is the principal referral hospital for Western Sydney Local Health District providing district level health services to Parramatta, Holroyd and The Hills Shire LGAs including tertiary and quaternary services to greater Western Sydney, greater metropolitan Sydney, rural NSW and other states.

Westmead Hospital is a leading centre of research, training and specialisation in all fields of Medicine and Dentistry, providing services in Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Kidney and Pancreas transplantation, Cancer Care, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Neonatal Intensive Care, Trauma, Bone Marrow Transplantation, Critical Care, Aged Care and Rehabilitation, Adult Acute Psychiatry (networked with the co-located Cumberland Hospital) as well as other specialised medical and surgical services.

Westmead Hospital is also the principal referral centre for other metropolitan hospitals within the district including Auburn Hospital, Blacktown and Mount Druitt Hospital.

Intensive care service in Westmead hospital includes 36 general, and 10 post cardiothoracic surgical ICU beds. Common ICU admissions include complex medical cases such as sepsis, severe respiratory or cardiac failure, complicated bone marrow transplant, and surgical cases including trauma, neurosurgery, vascular, cardiothoracic, ENT, plastic surgery, urology, upper GI, hepatobiliary, and colorectal procedures.

What you'll be doing
WSLHD - JMO - Unaccredited Trainee - Cardiology - Westmead Hospital

This position offers senior medical trainees the chance to enhance their clinical skills in the disciplines of Cardiology, Geriatric or General Medicine within a tertiary institution. The unaccredited advanced trainee must have successfully completed the RACP Divisional Clinical Exam.

Unaccredited Trainees will provide patient care under the supervision of a Consultant Physician (Attending Medical Officer) who has the legal responsibility for the care of the patients. They will also supervise junior medical staff, usually PGY1&2, and provide some assistance and supervision to basic physician trainees allocated to the Department.

Unaccredited trainees will communicate regularly with junior medical staff, Nursing staff, Allied health professionals, Secretarial staff, General Practitioners, and their supervising consultant and the departmental manager.

Day to day clinical management decisions, prioritisation of activities and appropriate delegation skills will be provided by the Attending Medical Officers and designated supervisors. Unaccredited Trainees are given responsibility for patient care that is graded according to their experience and demonstrated competence level.

Participating in after hours and on call rosters.

- MBBS or equivalent, currently registered or eligible for registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
- Completion of at least three postgraduate years
- Successful completion of the RACP Part 1 and be enrolled with the Royal Australasian College of Physicians.
- Demonstrated commitment to ongoing education, excellent theoretical knowledge and clinical judgement, research and teaching in Cardiology with a commitment to continuous quality improvement.
- Demonstrated ability to provide empathetic and expert clinical care.
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary clinical team - diligence, punctuality, organization, record keeping, time management, problem solving skills, team work.
- Demonstrated excellent communication (verbal and written) with patients, their families, medical and non-medical colleagues.
- Evidence shown to have applied to both platforms to be eligible for Advanced Training in Cardiology.
