Cairns School of Distance Education is inviting applications for a Guidance Officer position on a temporary full-time basis for 6 months, with potential extensions up to 12 months. The school's culture emphasizes individualized curriculum and high levels of educational support through close professional relationships with students and home tutors.

Applicants from State Schools must obtain their principal's permission before applying, as release requires authorization.

This role includes a 0.4 FTE GO-wellbeing component and a 0.6 FTE generic guidance officer role. More information is available at http://www.cairnssde.eq.edu.au.

This vacancy is open for Expressions of Interest. Extensions will not exceed 12 months.


About The Role

As a Guidance Officer - Wellbeing, you will be part of a multidisciplinary team providing therapeutic support to students with mild-to-moderate mental health concerns.


Responsibilities

* Assess students' mental health needs to guide interventions;
* Deliver individual and group mental health support;
* Collaborate with school leadership and support teams to plan support strategies;
* Develop referral and case management processes;
* Coordinate with external agencies and stakeholders;
* Advise and assist families regarding student mental health;
* Support school responses to critical incidents and emergencies;


About You

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

* Support and intervention planning for students with mental health difficulties;
* Ability to provide advice and counselling on various wellbeing issues;
* Experience supporting students at risk of self-harm or suicide;


Guidance Officer Capabilities

* Leadership in delivering inclusive educational programs;
* Effective counselling and case management skills;
* Strong interpersonal skills and relationship building;
* Ability to develop student support programs for high-need students;
* Responsiveness to complex student issues ethically.
