Your new role
In this team, you will work as a hands-on Java Developer focused on building, refactoring, and modernising applications for AWS. You'll play a key role in designing and improving backend services and APIs, working closely with senior engineers, architects, and delivery teams to migrate and optimise workloads in a cloud‑native environment.
You'll contribute across the full development lifecycle - from designing solutions and enhancing legacy systems, through to refactoring applications for AWS services like Lambda, API Gateway, SQS/SNS, DynamoDB, and container‑based runtimes. Your work will directly support the agency's shift toward event‑driven and API‑led architectures.
What you'll need to succeed
Australian Citizen | Minimum Baseline Security Clearance
You'll bring strong hands‑on experience with Java, MuleSoft (or similar integration platforms), and modern backend development frameworks. You're comfortable designing, building, and maintaining APIs, and you take a thoughtful approach to testing, validation, and production readiness.
Key strengths include:
* Solid experience with Java and API‑driven development.
* Understanding of modern integration approaches (API‑led, event‑driven).
* Practical experience refactoring applications for AWS, not just lift‑and‑shift.
* Familiarity with containers, Dockerfile design, and runtime behaviour.
* Ability to assess legacy systems, identify risks, and guide modernisation decisions.
* Comfort working in an agile, multidisciplinary environment.
* A structured mindset when it comes to migration readiness and hidden‑dependency identification.
