Job detailsInfrastructure Engineers implement, manage and retire the infrastructure (including physical, virtual, networking and cloud infrastructure) that supports digital services.The OpenStack Infrastructure Engineer is responsible for the end-to-end architectural design, procurement, and operational management of our private cloud platform. This role will serve as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) for OpenStack (compute) and Ceph (storage) platforms. The primary objective is to ensure a stable, scalable, and high performing environment for the agency’s critical virtual machine workloads.The statement of requirements for goods/services required by the agency is for an OpenStack Infrastructure Engineer to manage end-to-end architectural design, procurement, and operational management of our private cloud platform.
Key duties and responsibilitiesArchitectural Design: Lead the design and expansion of OpenStack and Ceph clusters, including rack layouts, power requirements, and hardware placement Lifecycle Management: Manage the end-to-end procurement process for server hardware, ensuring specifications meet platform performance requirements.Network Engineering: Design and implement software defined networking configurations for cloud platforms, ensuring secure and efficient traffic flow.Subject Matter Expertise: Provide high level technical advice to internal stakeholders regarding cloud capacity planning, performance tuning, and disaster recovery strategies.
Technical skillsCloud Orchestration: Deep technical proficiency in OpenStack (Nova, Neutron, Keystone, Horizon) Distributed Storage: Advanced expertise in Ceph storage architecture, management, and troubleshooting. Hardware Design: Knowledge of physical infrastructure, including server hardware specifications, rack design, and cabling standards. Networking: Strong understanding of Layer 2 / Layer 3 networking, including VLANs, and load balancing withing a virtualised environment.
Essential criteria1.Demonstrated Experience with OpenStack: Extensive experience in the administration, configuration, and troubleshooting of OpenStack services in a large-scale production environment.2.Network Configuration for Cloud Environments: Demonstrated ability to design and troubleshoot complex networking layouts, including VLANs, and software defined networking (SDN) within a cloud environment.3.Linux System Administration: Strong technical skills in managing enterprise Linux distributions (preferably RHEL), including automated deployment package management, and system Troubleshooting and SME support: A track record of acting as a Subject Matter Expert (SME) to resolve complex infrastructure incidents and provide technical guidance on platform stability.
Desirable criteria1.Proficient in Ceph Storage: Proven ability to manage, scale, and optimise Ceph clusters, including expertise with OSDs, MONs, and CRUSH map Lifecycle and Data Centre Design: Experience in the physical aspects of platform management, including hardware procurement, rack design, and data centre and CI/CD Expertise: Experience in developing and maintaining automation scripts and managing infrastructure as code via CI/CD pipelines.
