Plant automation and control technician

Hobart
Cement Australia
Posted: 30 April
Offer description

This is a rare role in a place that is pretty hard to beat.

Tasmania's north west does not get the attention it deserves - clean air, a tight community, genuine work-life balance, and scenery that is hard to find elsewhere in the country. If you're considering a change, this role is worth considering.

Our Railton site hosts one of Australia's most significant cement manufacturing operations, and we are seeking an experienced Plant Automation and Control Technician. It is a role with real depth and a proud history - several of our current senior leaders started here. If you're ready for the next step, we are ready for you.

Your Opportunity

As the go-to expert for automation and control, the successful candidate will provide critical troubleshooting support to the site's electrical maintenance and engineering teams. Beyond this, the role offers opportunities to influence continuous improvement, mentor others, and contribute to the site's long-term operational excellence.

As our Plant Automation and Control Technician, your key responsibilities will be to:

* Ensure systems, processes and controls are in place to achieve and maintain HSE critical elements.
* Provide engineering design, implementation and support for process automation, ensuring compliance with Australian standards and best practices.
* Ensure robust automation systems and protocols are in place and maintained.
* Administer and maintain process control systems to ensure optimal performance, availability, and effective communication with stakeholders.
* Design, develop, and implement automation solutions that improve plant reliability, efficiency, and cost-effective operations.
* Support plant capital projects through design and integration expertise.
* Manage and maintain relevant PCS (Process Control Systems) registers.
* Prioritise, assess and implement system change requests.
* Support lifecycle management of automation and control systems.
* Collaborate in maintenance budget planning by providing accurate cost estimates.
* Promote and contribute to a culture of continuous improvement by identifying and implementing initiatives that enhance automation and process system reliability.

This role holds a proud legacy at our site, having served as the launchpad for several of our current senior leaders' careers. Are you ready for the next step in your career?

What You'll Bring

To be considered for this role, you will be an experienced Automation and Control professional with a positive demeanour and several years of post-trade or graduate engineering experience in the manufacturing or mining industry, including extensive hands‐on work with automation systems across a range of industrial environments.

To compliment your studies and practical experience, ideally you will have:

* Proficiency in diagnosing faults in control systems and industrial machinery with expertise configuring and managing SCADA systems to monitor and control industrial processes in real‐time.
* Advanced PLC programming capability including proficiency in designing and troubleshooting ladder logic, function block diagrams (FBD), and structured text (ST) & HMI.
* Expertise in Industrial control and communication networks, Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Modbus TCP, PROFIBUS, PROFINET, CANBus and ASi bus.
* Familiarity with variable frequency drives (VFDs) for controlling the motion of machinery.
* High competency in computer hardware, operating systems and networking infrastructure.
* Experience in and motivation to train junior technicians and operators.
* Proven success in a heavy industrial, transport, manufacturing or mining environment.
* A Bachelor of Engineering, Certificate IV in Industrial Control and Automation and/or hold an Australian Electrical Licence combined with experience using and programming PLC's and SCADA (Siemens S7 Series, Citect and ABB 800XA SCADA systems highly desirable).
* Good Microsoft Office suite skills.
