The key duties of the position include The Role The Office of the Defence Seaworthiness Regulator (ODSwR) supports the Defence Seaworthiness Regulator in administering the Defence Seaworthiness Management System - the key maritime safety regulatory framework that applies to Defence vessels. We are seeking an experienced EL1 safety practitioner with a passion for leading analysis activities and projects to drive positive outcomes. The Deputy Director Safety, Environment and Technology will lead a team of safety, environment and technology specialists in the planning and delivery of strategic deliverables, business as usual tasks and ad hoc activities which: Identify, analyse and provide guidance on emerging hazards and risks, incidents and legislative or regulatory changes that may impact the regulated community; Investigate and advise on safety and environmental issues related to emerging capabilities such as robotic and autonomous systems and nuclear power submarines, analysing gaps or impediments in DSwMS and other applicable regulatory and legislative frameworks and proposing areas of improvement and solutions; Maintain in-depth knowledge of international and domestic safety, environmental and technology frameworks and associated stakeholders and activities, and communicate how they affect the defence maritime community to diverse stakeholders; Develop and lead projects in support of safety, environment and technology related outcomes; and Provide subject matter expertise in support of the activities of the Directorate, ODSwR and the defence enterprise more broadly. This role will work closely with internal stakeholders in ODSwR, Australian Naval Classification Authority (ANCA), NavySafe, Maritime Safety Bureau, Maritime Warfare Centre, and Maritime Integrated Capabilities (MIC), and external stakeholders such as the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) and the Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water in maintaining an understanding of the operating environment of our regulated community and prioritising activities in response. This role, like all roles in ODSwR, will also be supporting the whole-of-ODSwR project building and implementing a refined seaworthiness regulatory framework. About our Team The Office of the Defence Seaworthiness Regulator (ODSwR) provides the Defence Seaworthiness Authority (Chief of Navy) with independent assurance that maritime mission systems (warships, naval auxiliaries, and Defence vessels) across the Defence Enterprise, comply with the Regulations as outlined in the Defence Seaworthiness Management System. Led by the Director-General Seaworthiness, ODSwR comprises of five Directorates and embraces the principles of a data driven regulator to identify, analyse, report on and resolve the impact of emerging hazards and risk to Seaworthiness in Defence.
