Our client provides a complete range of analytical services required by organisations to meet statutory and voluntary testing obligations. The laboratory officer is responsible for trace level organic testing capability.
The main responsibility for this position is sample preparation and analysis. The position is laboratory based and experience in a laboratory environment is essential. The focus will be Mass Spectrometry based analysis of environmental samples (soils and waters) and biota (foods). The tests are for trace level organic contaminants such as pesticides, PCBs, PAHs, PFAS, dioxins and other persistent organic pollutants. The laboratory officer reports to laboratory team leaders of the Ultra Trace and Organics sections, depending on assignment**.**
**Main tasks**:
- To undertake the extraction and clean-up of environmental and biota samples to allow trace analysis using gas chromatography and liquid chromatography instruments.
- Prepare batch QC samples as per documented method and Quality Manual.
- Vial extracts and load extracts onto instruments for analysis. Set up instrumental parameters for analysis and monitor instrument performance. Process raw data from instruments and assess data based on QA/QC acceptance criteria.
- Work in a team environment and prioritise work to achieve targeted turnaround times of results.
- Understand and follow the NMI WH&S manual and safety SOPs particular to the Organics laboratory.
**Skills and knowledge required**:
- Ability to independently undertake testing of environmental samples showing initiative and judgement.
- The successful applicant will have tertiary qualifications in a scientific field (chemistry or equivalent).
- Experience in performing GC/MS and/or LC/MS/MS based analytical work, preferably at least 1-2 years hands on.
- A desirable feature is knowledge of QA/QC requirements for a NATA accredited testing laboratory.
- The applicant must be highly organised and able to work in a fast turnaround time environment to meet client's needs. Strong ability to deliver high quality results under pressure in a busy laboratory environment.
- The analyst must demonstrate experience with working in a team environment to achieve mutual goals.
