* $124,393 - $140,315 + up to 15.4% Superannuation (Includes scheduled March 2026 pay increase in accordance with the Defence Enterprise Collective Agreement 2024. Applicants commencing prior to the pay increase will be appointed within the pay range of $120,303 - $135,701)

The Role
Research engineering branch has two roles available within our Mechanical Fabrication team. This team encompasses a sizeable number of skilled technical staff; a large primary workshop and multiple smaller niche workshops; and fabrication technologies including CNC, manual machining, sheet metal work, aircraft-certified welding, waterjet and laser cutting, and mechanical inspection.
Reporting to the Group Leader Mechanical Engineering, these roles will work collaboratively to manage a significant manufacturing facility and work program at our DSTG Edinburgh site.

Leader Mechanical Fabrication Operations:
Will provide day-to-day direction to within the main EDN workshop areas. They will be responsible for a sizable team of skilled technical staff in the delivery of a dynamic program of work. Working closely with program and project management staff they will prioritise, allocate, monitor & support work in progress. They will utilise high levels of technical expertise to assist forecasting of work, solve problems, propose solutions and support rapid resolution of issues as they arise. They will employ effective written and verbal communication skills in order to provide clear direction to all MFAB staff on matters of program, prioritisation and process expectations. As a supervisor they will lead, mentor, inspire and develop their staff.

Leader Mechanical Fabrication Capability:
Will work together with the Research Engineering Leadership team and provide governance to all of the RE mechanical fabrication areas across the Edinburgh site. Responsible for a team of skilled technical staff, they will be accountable for facility readiness and performance, managing the work area budget, facility maintenance, and quality assurance and inspection processes including those associated with work area safety and security practices. They will engage with stakeholders in order to identify and implement capital improvements to ensure ongoing suitability of the capability. They will employ effective written and verbal communication skills in order to ensure that all staff within the Mechanical Fabrication work area are engaged with broader RE/DST/Defence. As a supervisor they will lead, mentor, inspire and develop their staff.

Research Engineering (RE) branch provides integrated, multi-disciplined, leading edge, rapid response and innovative scientific engineering capability to the Defence S&T program.

RE is dedicated to collaborating closely with DSTG researchers while providing valuable support to Defence and National Security operations and provides capabilities across six functional areas:

* Electronic and Software Engineering;
* Electronic Fabrication;
* Micro and Nano Engineering;
* Mechanical Fabrication;
* Mechanical Engineering; and
* Scientific Applied Imaging.

Certified to the IOS9001 Quality Management System, RE provides consistent fit for purpose engineering solutions and the application of best business practices.

This is an outstanding opportunity for an experienced mechanical fabrication specialist, workshop manager, or mechanical fabrication team leader.

The successful candidate for this role will be able to demonstrate that they have:

* Experience working on and prioritising between multiple concurrent programs.
* Experience with preparing and contributing to reports and other engineering documents.
* Excellent interpersonal skills - Team player and confident consulting skills.
* Experience working with a range of Mechanical Fabrication and quality assurance technologies.
* Experience working and/or managing a Mechanical Fabrication/workshop environment, including management of personnel, capabilities and budget.
* Proven ability to communicate effectively with staff, project management, design, engineering, and clients.
