Our client is a major player in the energy space, delivering critical infrastructure to support Australia's energy transition and the integration of renewable energy zones, large‑scale storage and interconnectors. They have a multi-billion-dollar investment plans and are looking to grow their established legal team.
Position Description
Reporting to the Deputy General Counsel with a dotted line to the General Counsel the Legal Counsel will be a key legal advisor in large-scale infrastructure projects. You will work across the project from contract formation, through execution, to close‑out and dispute resolution.
You will sit in a wider team of 7 lawyers that are known for their teamwork and collaboration.
Key responsibilities include:
* Advising on the structuring, negotiation, drafting and administration of major delivery contracts including: EPC, design‑build, D&C, OEM, Major Equipment & Supply Contracts, financing agreement, associated with major projects.
* Supporting project teams and senior management on complex legal, commercial and risk matters throughout project delivery.
* Leading and managing disputes, claims, variations and other contentious issues arising from major infrastructure projects.
* Collaborating closely with project delivery, procurement, commercial and engineering teams to ensure legal and contractual risk is managed, mitigated and escalated appropriately.
* Advising on governance, compliance and contractual performance matters across the large portfolio of works.
* Mentoring junior legal counsel and contributing to the strategic build‑out of the legal function supporting project delivery.
* Oversee all procurement and tendering process for major projects.
* Drafting corporate partnership agreements and long‑term construction and engineering services panel agreements.
Ideal Candidate
You will have:
* Minimum of 5 + years' post‑qualification experience in construction, infrastructure, or corporate energy, ideally a combination of private practice and in‑house experience.
* Demonstrated experience advising on major infrastructure contracts (EPC, design‑build, utility transmission/energy projects).
* Strong drafting and negotiation skills, with the ability to provide pragmatic advice in a commercial environment.
* Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills, able to engage confidently with senior executives, project teams and external advisors.
* A collaborative mindset, with a readiness to operate in a dynamic, high‑volume project environment and contribute to building the legal capability of the business.
* Familiarity with the NEM and broader energy regulatory frameworks would be ideal but is not essential.
