About the opportunity

The Technical Officer will work across the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA) and the School of Natural Sciences (SNS) to support teaching and research activities.

The Technical Officer will provide technical support to laboratory-based and field-based practicals for undergraduate students. In addition, they will support research projects, day-to-day operations and the activities of research laboratories. The incumbent will broadly promote a safety culture compliant with UTAS and Work Health and Safety regulations. This position will report to the Laboratory Manager (TIA) with indirect reporting to the SNS Facilities Manager for the relevant laboratory and practical work.

What you'll do:

* Support the organisation and management of day-to-day operations in research and teaching laboratories and provide high level support services.
* Contribute to technical elements of the teaching program including demonstration, preparation, and delivery of teaching resources.
* Provide high level support to TIA and SNS staff and students to ensure that laboratories, glasshouses, and other facilities are appropriately managed, maintained and operated.
* Coordinate the development, maintenance and revision of laboratory manuals, safe work procedures, generic risk assessments, audits, logbooks, maintenance records and other documentation for facilities and equipment in accordance with statutory requirements and UTAS policy.
* Coordinate and maintain records for preventative maintenance, repair, calibration, and scheduled servicing of laboratory equipment. Arrange and oversee corrective/preventative work-requests as required.
* Oversee access to restricted laboratory areas, ensuring that appropriate training records are maintained and induct personnel into facilities including laboratories and other workspaces as required.

What we're looking for:

* Demonstrated understanding and proficiency in laboratory and field processes and procedures.
* Strong WHS knowledge and safe work systems management, including the management and handling of chemicals and laboratory hazards.
* Proven organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise, meet deadlines, and work independently with limited supervision whilst participating effectively in a team environment.
* Highly developed communication skills with a proven ability to work with staff and students from diverse cultures and backgrounds to achieve the required outcomes.
* Skills and experience using a range of computer packages, including word processing, databases, spreadsheets, email and cloud-based systems.

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 5 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $105,665 comprising base salary within the range of $80,869 to $90,312 plus 17% superannuation.
