We are looking for a customer‐focused, high‐performing Senior Payroll Officer to join our payroll team and help drive continuous improvement across our payroll processes.
What is this role all about?
The Senior Payroll Officer works closely with the Payroll Manager and team to deliver end‐to‐end payroll for an award‐based, multi‐location organisation in Australia. As the subject‐matter expert on Australian payroll, the role ensures accurate and timely pay for AU and NZ employees, resolves payroll queries, and maintains compliance with payroll legislation.
Core Responsibilities
* Serve as specialist contact point for all payroll enquiries and resolve discrepancies for AU.
* Process payroll end‐to‐end for salaried and award staff in a timely, accurate and efficient manner.
* Handle new employee onboarding, terminations, salary variations and adjustments.
* Complete monthly payroll returns and submit payments to relevant State authorities on time.
* Analyse and validate time & attendance records, ensuring compliance with awards and legislation.
* Assist with Year‐End reconciliation and preparation of payroll reports.
* Maintain payroll legislation knowledge, including PAYG, FBT and general tax.
* Ensure employee personnel files are maintained and conduct ongoing system maintenance.
* Support monthly payroll reconciliations and journal entries in collaboration with other departments.
* Provide reconciliation documentation for independent audit of pay‐run processes.
* Deliver payroll reports and information as required.
* Document, review and enforce adherence to payroll policies, procedures and standards.
* Investigate and resolve payroll issues proactively, participating in broader HR initiatives.
* Partner with HR to recommend and drive process improvements.
* Assist in project work for system enhancement and stabilization.
What do we need from you?
* Proven 3+ years of end‐to‐end payroll processing experience for AU employees in a high‐volume, fast‐paced environment (NZ payroll knowledge advantageous).
* Proficiency in payroll and HRIS platforms, particularly Dayforce (prior HR experience highly regarded).
* Strong knowledge of awards, PAYG, FBT, superannuation and tax.
* Excellent analytical and problem‐solving skills with a strong attention to detail.
* Collaborative team player with a proactive, customer‐focused mindset.
* Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of educating stakeholders.
* Relevant education (e.g., diploma or higher in Human Resources or Finance, Cert IV in Payroll) is advantageous.
