Female Youth Diversion Officer (Case Worker) – Section 50(d)

Full‐time fixed‐term contract to 31 December 2026.

Salary commensurate with experience – $83,136 to $101,849 (from 1 July 2026) per annum, plus superannuation and applicable regional allowances.

About the Role

The Youth Engagement Program (YEP) in East Kimberley – Kununurra and Halls Creek – appoints two Aboriginal Youth Diversion officers (one male and one female) to provide culturally competent, holistic, individualized and flexible support to young people appearing in the Kununurra Children's Courts. The role involves:

* Case management, mentoring, court support, advocacy, and referral to community programs.
* Practical assistance to help young people re‐engage in education and participate in therapeutic programs.
* Attendance at Children's Courts; conducting appointments via phone or MS Teams with clients in Banksia Hill Detention Centre; regular home visits, including to remote communities.
* Providing transport support to court and appointments.
* Ensuring young people engage in programs and comply with court requirements.
* Liaising with Youth Justice Services and other local agencies; performing administrative duties.

About You

Essential criteria:

* Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively with Aboriginal people, particularly Aboriginal young people, and to work with them with cultural understanding, empathy and sensitivity.
* Highly developed written and verbal communication skills.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Critical thinking and problem‐solving skills.
* High‐level organizational and time‐management skills, working well under pressure.
* Willingness to travel when required.
* Commitment to child safety.
* Proficiency in workplace technology, including client‐management databases.
* Valid driver's licence.
* Ability to obtain a Working with Children Check, National Police Clearance, and Department of Justice Clearance.

Desirable skills and experience:

* Knowledge of issues relating to Aboriginal children in the youth justice system and basic understanding of the youth justice/legal system.
* Understanding of the issues affecting the Aboriginal community in East Kimberley.
* Knowledge of Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisations and other stakeholders.
* Qualifications in social work, youth work or related fields, and/or relevant experience in community support services.
