Audit & Assurance Officer

Your New Role
Reporting to the Manager of Audit & Corporate Assurance, you will contribute to the delivery of the council's internal audit and assurance program. This is a hands‑on, investigative, and highly analytical role where you will partner closely with stakeholders across all service areas to strengthen governance, reduce organisational risk, and enhance internal processes.
Day‑to‑day, you will:
* Undertake risk‑based internal audit reviews, including planning, fieldwork, analysis, reporting, and follow‑up actions.
* Conduct investigations into suspected fraud, corruption or compliance breaches when required.
* Deliver probity reviews and targeted assurance activities across council operations.
* Support the preparation and coordination of Audit, Risk & Improvement Committee meetings.
* Review and improve internal audit systems, standards and processes to support quality assurance.
* Engage with staff across all levels of the organisation to gather evidence, challenge assumptions, and influence outcomes.
* Provide clear written reports and recommendations to drive continuous improvement.
* Assist with ad hoc tasks aligned with your professional skills and the needs of the audit function.
What You'll Need to Succeed
* Degree qualifications in Business, Commerce or Accounting, plus CA/CPA (mandatory).
* High integrity, strong ethical judgement and the ability to model professional behaviour.
* Strong analytical, research and problem‑solving skills with attention to detail.
* Excellent communication skills and the confidence to liaise with stakeholders at all organisational levels.
* Ability to work autonomously, manage competing priorities, and deliver outcomes within deadlines.
Desirable:
* Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) qualification.
* 8+ years of internal audit experience.
* Previous experience within local government or a public sector environment.
