Job Summary

The High School/Middle School Guidance Counselor provides academic, social, and emotional support to students within a safe and positive learning environment. Plans and implements schedules and assists students in determining collegiate and career related endeavors.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

* Assists all students individually with developing academic and career goals and plans; reviews transcripts; selects courses for the following school year based on student interests and projected career path; updates and adjusts student schedules as needed.
* Conducts individual interviews with high school seniors to discuss post-graduation plans; assists seniors with Free Application for Financial Student Aid (FAFSA) and college applications; prepares letters of recommendation and sends transcripts as requested.
* Identifies students who have lost credits due to attendance and/or grades; conducts meetings with students and parents to discuss plan-of-action; monitors progress.
* Conducts Individualized Education Plan (IEP) conferences for special needs students.
* Counsels students with problems and issues that may or may not affect their academics; recognizes when students' needs surpass counselors' training and refers students as necessary to other mental health agencies; follows protocols to ensure student safety.
* Assesses students in crisis and contacts parents as required; keeps school administrators informed of crisis situations and makes appropriate referrals to outside agencies.
* Establishes and maintains relationships with parents and staff members for effective communication of students' academic, social and emotional status, including interpretation of student achievement data.
* Assists with all standardized testing preparation and proctoring including Indiana Statewide Testing for Educational Progress (ISTEP); coordinates testing for all Advanced Placement (AP) and college admission standardized tests (SAT/ACT).
* Maintains accurate student records and keeps track of Dual Credit programs with Ivy Technical Community College of Indiana and Purdue University Northwest.
* Organizes various community-based events including college fairs, Awards Ceremony night, Financial Aid night, and orientation; coordinates college and military representatives' campus visits; chaperones the visits to Building Trades programs; assists with graduation rehearsal.
* Meets with 21st Century Scholars to review Scholar Track progress.
* Collaborates with community partners regarding student matters and to participate in school improvement initiatives.
* Creates Master Schedule based on sections decided upon by administration.
* Supervises school counseling intern.
* Uses data to develop the school counseling program and evaluates the program's impact on the school's instructional goals; implements program revisions.
* Adheres to and maintains comprehensive and current knowledge of applicable laws and regulations; attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.
* Maintains professional discretion in processing matters of a sensitive or confidential nature from both a legal and ethical perspective.
* Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

* Master's degree in school counseling from an accredited college or university.
* Prior experience as a school counselor or completion of school counseling internship.
* Professional Educator's License-School Counselor K-12.
* Must be CPR and First Aid Certified.

Physical Demands

* Requires prolonged sitting and standing.
* Occasionally requires physical exertion to manually move, lift, carry, pull, or push light objects or materials of up to 20 pounds.
* Occasionally requires stooping, bending and reaching.
* Requires the ability to talk, see, feel, and hear.
* Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision sufficient to read typed or written material.

Work Environment

* The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
* Work is generally performed indoors.
* The employee shall remain free of any alcohol or non-prescribed controlled substances in the workplace throughout his/her employment in the Corporation.
